McClatchy Co. agreed to buy Knight Ridder Inc., the U.S.'s second-largest newspaper company, for about $4.5 billion in cash and stock, plus the assumption of about $2 billion in debt, the companies announced Monday.

Over the past few years, McClatchy has grappled with debt largely left over from its $4.5 billion acquisition of publishing giant Knight Ridder in 2006. On Dec. 25, at the end of McClatchy's fiscal year, that long-term debt was $873.7 million, after the company repurchased $32.8 million in bonds.
