New York, Dec. 4 (OsterDowJones) - The Mar arabica coffee contract was 125
points lower at 69.70 cents per pound midway through Wednesday's session,
paring an early 195-point loss. The market gapped down and fell to a four-day
low, but uncovered buying.
"There's been some arbitrage buying in New York against selling in the
BM&F (Sao Paulo futures) this morning," a desk trader here said. "U.S.
roasters are buying.
"But it's a pretty quiet day."
USDA is scheduled to release a tropical products report on coffee Friday
afternoon.
Brazilian officials issue their first forecast of the 2003-04 crop soon,
possibly late next week. The Agriculture Ministry's National Crop Supply Corp.
(Conab) is surveying fields in seven states and needs to do more in Minas
Gerais and Espirito Santo.
Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture put Brazil's 2002-03 harvest
at a huge 51.6 million bags.
Brazil's new crop may be only half the size of the last one, however,
because of recent dry weather and the bearing cycle of trees.
Another 29 CSCE Dec notices were posted Wednesday, bringing the total to
3,362.
Chart support for CSCE Mar lies at 69.00c and 68.60c to 68.50c, while
resistance is found at 70.70c to 70.80c, 71.50c, 72.00c, 72.70c, 73.80c to
74.00c, and 75.00c, traders said.
