SUGAR
il governo US sta per ritirare un'enorme quantità dal mercato il 1 aprile...

After a year of lower prices, sugar exchange traded funds could finally see some support as the U.S. government considers taking a large chunk of sugar off the market.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is thinking about purchasing 400,000 tons of sugar to support defaulting U.S. sugar processors, reports Alexandra Wexler for the Wall Street Journal. A final decision will be made as early as April 1.

The move would bolster profits for companies that turn sugar beets and sugar cane into granulated sweetener, but this would also translate to higher retail food prices.

"Clearly, the USDA has made up its mind that Big Sugar is going to trump the American consumer," Pierson Bob Clair, president and chief executive at Brown & Haley, said in the article.

Barbara Fecso, an economist at the USDA, expects that the USDA could go ahead with the new buying program unless domestic prices rebound.

A bumper crop year for sugar beets in the upper Midwest and sugar cane has pressured U.S. sugar prices.

dato che pare che i large speculators abbiano ridotto molto l'esposizione short sul Sugar

Speculators cut their net short position in raw sugar contracts on ICE Futures US by more than half in the week ended March 12. ICE raw sugar futures failed to close above a resistance level of 19 cents on Friday, seen contributing to downward pressure on Monday. Trading volumes were heavy, at nearly 143,000 lots, compared to a 30-day average of under 89,000, preliminary Thomson Reuters data showed. May white sugar on Liffe fell $12, or 2.2 percent, to finish at $527.40 a tonne.

Brazil - Coffee producers expect government to prop up prices
Tuesday March 19 2013

Coffee producers will seek to convince ministers to step in and prop up the price of coffee, the President of the Agricultural and Livestock Federation of the State of Minas Gerais (FAEMG), Roberto Simoes, said.

The government has helped shore up coffee prices in the past, Simoes explained, by offering to buy beans on a certain date at a certain price. Most of the time though, the price of coffee rose enough before the specified date so that the government did not in the end have to buy any coffee, he added.
