Manufacturing sector growth slows in June
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. manufacturing growth slowed in June, as the pace of employment weakened and new orders rose, according to a survey published on Monday.

The Institute for Supply Management said its index of national factory activity fell to 53.8 in June from 54.4 in May, falling short of economists' forecasts for a rise to 55.

A reading above 50 indicates growth in the factory sector.

The prices paid index, which measures inflationary pressures within the factory sector, fell to 76.5 in June from 77.0 in May.

The new orders component, a gauge of future growth, rose to 57.9 in June from 53.7 in May, while the employment index fell to 48.7 in June from 52.9 in May.

Stocks advance; GM shares lead blue-chips
By Vivianne Rodrigues

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose on Monday in thin trading, led by gains in General Motors Corp. on news of a possible partnership by the country's largest automaker with France's Renault and Japan's Nissan.

Stocks reacted little to a report showing growth in U.S. manufacturing slowed in June.

Dow component General Motors extended Friday's rally and led blue-chips up. The board of French automaker Renault is set to discuss opening its partnership with Nissan to the U.S. carmaker.

Nissan said its board of directors had approved exploratory discussions on a potential three-way alliance with GM.

Also helping GM, Banc of America raised its rating on the stock to "neutral" from "sell," citing news of the possible linkup. GM shares rose 1.7 percent to $30.29.

"GM is certainly helping the Dow," said Jon Brorson, managing director of growth equities at Neuberger Berman in Chicago. "Wall Street has been calling for radical change with GM and Ford."

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 54.91 points, or 0.49 percent, at 11,205.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 4.61 points, or 0.36 percent, at 1,274.81. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 7.16 points, or 0.33 percent, at 2,179.25.

The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will close at 1 p.m. (1700 GMT) on Monday for the July 4 Independence Day Holiday. Trading will resume at regular hours on Wednesday.

The Institute for Supply Management's index of national manufacturing activity fell to 53.8 in June from 54.4 in May, short of economists' forecasts for a rise to 55.

"It's a continuation of what we've been experiencing lately -- a little more sluggish growth," said Brorson.

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark federal funds rate on Thursday by a quarter percentage point to a five-year high of 5.25 percent, as expected, but toned down previous warnings about the possible need for further increases.

Citigroup Inc. rose 1.1 percent to $48.76 on the New York Stock Exchange. Citigroup's Chairman and Chief Executive Charles Prince rejected the idea of breaking up the financial services giant. He called it "the dumbest idea I've ever heard of," financial weekly Barron's reported in its latest edition.

The paper said that should Citigroup's stock price remain sluggish, there could be calls for the company to be broken up or Prince to be replaced.

Barron's also reported Playboy Enterprises looks undervalued, but its high overheads and the probability it won't be taken private soon may put a limit on the upside for the stock. Barron's said that Playboy could be a target for private equity buyers.

Shares in the company rose 0.2 percent to $10.00.

Among declines, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. slid 1.5 percent to $47.43. Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, estimated on Saturday that June sales rose 1.2 percent at its U.S. stores open at least a year, the low end of its forecast.
