On Wednesday, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera published what it said was a leaked letter from Pope Francis to Mr Maduro berating his government for not following through on its promises. Intriguingly, the February 7 letter, written in the Pope’s native Spanish, addresses Mr Maduro as “Excelentísimo señor” and not “Presidente”, suggesting the Vatican too no longer recognises his rule.
Sitting in his drawing room in a church compound in Caracas, Cardinal Baltazar Porras, a senior figure in the Venezuelan Church, says the Maduro regime has cynically “manipulated” attempts by the Pope to reach a negotiated settlement to the country’s crisis. “This regime always calls for dialogue when it’s up to its neck in water but when the water level falls it forgets about it,” he said. “If it consolidates itself in power, there will be more repression and more poverty.”
