U.S. Treasuries slip on soggy auction, Fed nears
NEW YORK, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Treasuries prices slipped on Wednesday after an auction of new U.S. government debt attracted only tepid demand, just an hour before the Federal Reserve is expected to raise official interest rates.
The sale of $14 billion in 10-year Treasury notes went at a high yield of 4.28 percent and drew bids for only 2.02 times the amount on offer, well short of the lofty 2.9 achieved at the last refunding.
Indirect bidders, including customers of primary dealers and foreign central banks, picked up $5.58 billion, or 40 percent, of the issue. That was below August's 54 percent share and a disappointment to traders. Primary dealers themselves took $8.14 billion of the sale.
The current 10-year note <US10YT=RR> was 11/32 lower in price, taking yields up to a two-month high of 4.27 percent from 4.22 percent on Tuesday. The market fully expects the Fed to raise the federal funds rate 0.25 percentage point to 2.00 percent when its meeting concludes at 2:15 p.m. (1915 GMT), but is hyper-sensitive to any hint on the pace of future moves.
Euro off as Italy minister cites intervention talk
NEW YORK, Nov 10 (Reuters) - The euro dipped modestly against the dollar on Wednesday after Italy's economy minister said there was talk about European central banks intervening to curb the currency's strength against the dollar.
Asked what caused the euro's modest slip to around $1.2870 from above $1.2880 <EUR=> in the wake of the Italian Minister's remarks, a trader at Fortis Bank in New York said, "that's what got this rolling here. ... The markets are running a little scared."
Several euro zone officials have warned in recent days that they are uncomfortable about the euro's strength against the dollar. The euro hit new record highs against the dollar earlier on Wednesday at $1.3005, according to Reuters data.
