Greek finance minister makes stop in Paris

Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou speaks to reporters after his meeting with his French counterpart Christine Lagarde in Paris yesterday.
The Greek finance minister said Greece’s recession may be less severe than had been predicted under the economic turnaround plan that helped it to stave off financial collapse earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Citigroup said yesterday that bonds issued by developed countries, including those with the highest credit ratings, such as Germany and the US, are not ‘completely safe,’ as demand for public spending is growing faster than revenues. Greece is the country most at risk of default, followed by Ireland, Portugal and Spain, the international bank group said.
The US may also face repayment challenges ‘at horizons longer than five years,’ it added. ‘We conclude that no sovereign debt can and should be considered completely safe,’ London-based economists Willem Buiter and Ebrahim Rahbari wrote in a note.

Ship demand

Greek shipowners, who have the world’s second-largest merchant fleet after China, bought 24 new ships last month, while their purchases of used vessels fell to seven, shipbroker Golden Destiny said.

The $1.33 billion spent on new ships compared with the $187 million spent on secondhand ones; in July, Greek owners spent $553 million on 15 used vessels, the Piraeus-based broker said yesterday in an e-mailed report.

“Greek owners have slowed their secondhand transactions, as they feel that the attractive new building prices offer better investment opportunities,” Golden Destiny said, adding that the prices of secondhand vessels hadn’t dropped in line with the cost of hiring ships, especially bulk carriers.

The shipping business expects strong winter demand for bulk carriers, Golden Destiny said, citing firm Chinese demand for iron ore and the need for ships to sail further to load wheat cargoes in countries such as Australia, Argentina and the US after Russia halted exports.

Oslo-based Arctic Securities yesterday raised its estimates of fourth-quarter rental rates for dry-bulk ships.

Per quanto mi riguarda faccio riferimento ai prezzi/rendimenti tedeschi ed in questo momento, rispetto ad un ora fa, la differenza si e' ancora allargata un poco.

Adesso, rispetto ad ieri, le scadenze dal 2013 al 2015 sono "verdi", dal 2016 al 2022 "rosse", dal '22 in poi di nuovo "verdi".
Le differenze con i prezzi di ieri sono comunque sia risibili, nell'ordine di meno di una decina di centesimi, pero' sta di fatto che c'e' stato un piccolo cambiamento rispetto a quella che era la norma sino ad ieri.

Se sia destinato a durare oppure no questo non mi e' dato di sapere, certo e' che mi auguro che questa piccola novita' sia confermata perche' sarebbe un sempre flebile, piccolo segnale, ma in positivo.

IMF May Extend Help For Greece



The IMF does not rule out giving more aid to Greece after the 3 year programme for the debt chocked country expires, the Wall Street Journal reports.

"Despite the exceptional access and support Greece has been given so far, that does not of itself preclude a future follow-up or additional arrangement with the IMF after its expiration in three years," a person familiar with the market told the newspaper.

“But the IMF expects Greece to return to normalized bond-market issuance and borrowing from international markets next year, so they don΄t anticipate the need for a further support package will arise," the person familiar with the matter said.

Greece’s Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou Thursday said that the Mediterranean country was hoping to return to markets next year, while he hit at a possible debt restructuring.

E' settembre e per il 10 ° anno consecutivo, il villaggio di Eressos sull'isola di Lesbo (Lesvos) in Grecia ha attirato lesbiche di tutta Europa per un festival internazionale unico per le donne. In un paese fortemente influenzato dalla chiesa greco-ortodossa e dove circa la metà della popolazione è contro il matrimonio tra persone dello stesso sesso, l'evento organizzato sull'isola della poetessa Saffo è stato silenziosamente cresciuto in questo angolo del Mar Egeo.

Negli ultimi dieci anni, la partecipazione alle due settimane del Festival Internazionale della Donna è passata da 30 alle attuali centinaia di donne, soprattutto tedesche, inglesi, olandesi e scandinave, ma ultimamente anche greche e italiane. Il fitto programma di eventi per sole donne prevede passeggiate e crociere al tramonto, intensi workshop, corsi di danza greca e proiezioni di film lesbichi. Inaugurato il 4 settembre la manifestazione chiuderà domani 18 settembre.

Nel 2000, quando il festival fu lanciato, la tensione era grande: un manifesto pubblicitario di uno dei suoi eventi aveva scatenato l'ira del sindaco del villaggio, che minacciò di portare in tribunale gli organizzatori e vietando la manifestazione, con la pro,messa di asportare il turismo lesbico da Eressos. Dieci anni dopo invece il comune ha prestato la Hall del Municipio per una delle mostre del festival e ha permesso l'utilizzo della spiaggia per mettere in scena l'evento di apertura, svoltosi il 4 settembre scorso. Le Lesbiche e i vacanzieri erano giunti a Lesbo dal 1970, attratti dalla associazione dell'isola con Saffo, nata proprio a Eressos (Lesvos), la poetessa greca del VII secolo che scrisse sul suo amore per le donne. Secondo l'agenzia di viaggi Sappho, le lesbiche ora costituiscono il 60 per cento dei visitatori del borgo, percentuale che sale al 90 per cento in settembre, quando si svolge il festival.

Certo che tale afflusso di donne in settembre è stato un toccasana all'economia dell'isola, anch'essa colpita, come il resto della Grecia, dalla grave crisi finanziaria. Però non mancano ancora oggi i problemi di integrazione sociale, l'omosessualità in Grecia ha ancora molta strada da compiere sulla via dei diritti fondamentali e delle normative giuridiche in materia. Il festival Internazionale della Donna ha contribuito comunque alla comprensione del fenomeno e alla sua accettazione sociale, almeno su questo lembo di terra nel magico blu dell'Egeo nord-orientale

per come la vedo io, i volumi sono troppo sottili per dare segnali di un'evoluzione dei corsi...
oltretutto lo spread denaro/lettera e' ancora alto, segno di incertezza e paura degli investitori...
Molto piu' interessante invece la curva dei rendimenti che hai segnalato in mattinata..

ECB's Weber: Governments Assure No Sovereign Defaults In EMU

OESTRICH-WINKEL, Germany (MNI) - European governments have made it clear that there will be no sovereign defaults in the Eurozone, European Central Bank Governing Council member Axel Weber said Friday.
Greece did the right thing by turning to the IMF and the international community to help it get out of its fiscal mess, the president of Germany's Bundesbank told an audience at a business school here.

Nevertheless, Greece must remain an "absolutely exception" going forward, Weber underscored, pleading for tougher budgetary rules in Europe.
"The European governments have made clear that there will be no sovereign defaults in the euro area," he emphasized, pointing out that they have not only put their signatures on this commitment but also one trillion dollars in loans and guarantees, agreed to in May.

In the future, however, governments will have to consolidate their budgets on their own, and sanctions must be levied against offenders, he argued.
"Greece has done the right thing, Greece has turned to the IMF," he said. "Greece has now the program which will help, with the help of the IMF and the international community, to get their house in order," he said.

"The pressure that the international community provides for Greece to embark on a sustainable path will help them to put through the necessary reforms," he elaborated.

Greece to auction 300 mln of 13-week T-bills Sept 21



ATHENS, Sept 17 | Fri Sep 17, 2010 5:17am EDT



ATHENS, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Greece will auction a total of 300 million euros ($394.1 million) of 13-week T-bills on September 21, the country's debt agency (PDMA) said on Friday.
The settlement date will be Sept. 24. Only primary dealers will be allowed to participate and no commission will be paid.
Non-competitive bids up to an additional 30 percent of the auctioned amount may be submitted until Sept 23.
