IMF on Greece' return to markets

WASHINGTON (ANA-MPA/T.Ellis) - "We expect that Greece may return to markets within the next 12 to 18 months”, Caroline Atkinson, the IMF’s Foreign Relations director said on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, Atkinson noted that the Greek program was proceeding as anticipated and stressed that the Greek government’s contacts with its creditors -that took place recently during a road show by Greek Finance Minister George Papakonstantinou accompanied by troika experts in European capitals- “went very well”.

The IMF official said Greece could return to markets by the end of 2011 or early 2012, although she underlined that a restructuring program allowed the country to remain outside capital markets for longer.

Brief Obama-Papandreou meeting

NEW YORK CITY (ANA-MPA) -- Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou held a brief meeting with US President Barack Obama early Friday morning (Athens time) during a reception hosted by the American leader in honour of visiting heads of state and government, held at a Manhattan museum.
The US president reportedly referred to the difficult task facing the Greek government and positive steps taken so far.
On his part, Papandreou congratulated Obama for his opening address at the 65th UN General Assembly and particularly for his recent initiatives vis-à-vis the Middle East, agreeing that all sides must contribute in order to find a solution.
The Greek premier also extended an invitation to Obama and his family to officially visit Greece.
Earlier, Papandreou addressed a "World Leadership Forum 2010" event at a New York hotel hosted by the Foreign Policy Association and presented a comprehensive view of the economic situation in Greece and the country's future prospects.
"Greece is a small country," the Greek premier said, adding that "the economic crisis is not our problem only and this has been shown by developments." Papandreou placed emphasis on the need to further reinforcing cooperation.
"Greece is a different country today, with a cradible government that works with determination in the path of longterm stability and growth," Papandreou noted.

Greek Market Hovers Around 1,500

Athens stocks post mixed signs on Friday around 1,500 on low turnover.

NBG is under severe pressure, with the stock shedding as much as 1.86% at 7.90 euro.

“Thin volumes enhance volatility, while it is obvious that the daily performance of NBG has a great impact on sentiment. We expect the same pattern to prevail today,” Piraeus Securities says.

“Selling pressures prevailed yesterday sending the index lower following a couple of mediocre positive sessions. It seems that the market has somewhat re-coupled with international sentiment following a period of underperformance. However, absenteeism is the market’s main characteristic manifested by the low volume level that barely made it over the EUR 70mn mark. We expect today’s session to open lower in line with the performance of bourses overseas,” Eurobank Securities notes in its morning report.

“The degree of pressure asserted on the Athens market during the end of yesterday’s session leaves little room for an upward reaction, at least during today’s start. The market’s weakness to provide investors with a promising ascending rebound towards the 1,580 units render us skeptical as to the GI’s short-term trend, considering that it is crucial for the market to retain the 1,490– 1,485 levels during today’s trading, in order to halt its downward course and not to re-test the levels of the 1,430 – 1,380 units. Concluding, we expect the GI to open on slightly lower levels, with a possible comeback to follow later in the day, bringing the GI towards yesterday’s close,” Pegasus Securities says.

Across the board, the General Index inches up 0.02% at 22.14 mil. euro.
