Truckers and traders fail to agree

Unionists to meet again today as impact of their work stoppage on market and businesses intensifies

Unionists representing truck owners yesterday failed to reach a compromise with traders who have suffered millions of euros in losses due to the truckers’ work stoppage, as an increasingly acute shortage of goods began to cause serious problems in various business sectors.
The heads of the unions representing truck owners and fuel truck drivers decided to meet again this afternoon to decide on their course of action.
Meanwhile, the impact of the truckers’ action – which has entered its third week – is being more keenly felt by businesses. Two of the country’s three biggest fish farms have suspended operations due to a shortage of fish feed. Basic goods are in short supply in supermarkets, particularly on the islands. Textile companies also have reported problems due to a lack of raw materials and their inability to deliver finished goods to businesses.
Over the weekend, the truck drivers had indicated that they might suspend their protest action for a week to allow deliveries to resume so goods could be supplied to stores and thousands of containers full of goods building up at the country’s ports could be collected.
But talks with Vassilis Korkidis, the head of the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce, and other trade sector representatives broke down amid speculation of a rift among the unionists.
The head of the truck owners’ union, Giorgos Tzortzatos, who has been leading the negotiations, had insisted on a meeting with Prime Minister George Papandreou. Government sources yesterday ruled out the possibility of Papandreou meeting with the truck drivers, who want the government to make further concessions.
As unionists argued about what to do next, hundreds of truckers kept their vehicles parked in long lines along major highways on the outskirts of Athens and Thessaloniki. At the Metamorphosi junction in northern Athens, scuffles broke out between truck drivers and police. A 65-year-old trucker who allegedly bit a senior police officer who had tried to restrain him was detained. Earlier in the day, a small group of protesters attempted to obstruct 20 trucks from boarding ferries at Keratsini, near Piraeus. Police used tear gas to disperse the protesting truck drivers and one person was arrested.

China Says Still Positive On European Bonds, Economies

BEIJING (MNI) - China's attitude towards European sovereign debt remains positive and the government will continue to support measures designed to support recovery in Europe, an official with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.

"China will continue to do its best in supporting the efforts of European countries to boost their economic recoveries and help them to overcome the debt crisis," Vice-Minister Fu Ying said.
"We are still positive on European bonds," she told reporters at a briefing ahead of Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Europe next week.

Wen is intending to visit Greece, Italy, Belgium and Turkey next week and will attend the Eighth Asia-Europe meeting in Brussels to discuss economic issues with European leaders.
European officials have confirmed that China has been a buyer of eurozone sovereign debt, including that issued by Greece and Spain.

Irish and Portuguese 10-year bond spreads both hit post-EMU highs in Tuesday morning European trading amid ongoing concerns about the fiscal health of the states on the periphery of the single currency union.

UPDATE 1-China backs debt-strained EU before Wen visit

Tue Sep 28, 2010 5:55am EDT

(Writes thru with additional quotes and details)

BEIJING, Sept 28 (Reuters) - China gave its backing on Tuesday to efforts by European Union countries to tackle their debt problems, ahead of a visit to Greece and other member states by Premier Wen Jiabao that will focus on the economy.
Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying said Wen's visit to Greece next week would also include unveiling agreements on shipping and ship financing.
"While in Greece, a focus of discussions could be how to respond to the current (financial) crisis," Fu told a news conferences about Wen's trip from October 2 to 9.
The debt strains facing a number of EU states also would be on the agenda when Premier Wen visits Belgium and Italy, as well and also meets senior EU finance officials in Brussels, said Fu.
Wen will also visit Turkey.
"We have a positive attitude towards the actions taken by the European Union and IMF, and we have noted the many measures adopted by the Greek government and the results they are producing," she said.
"We will encourage even more Chinese businesses to invest in Greece if that is suitable, and also encourage more tourists to go there," she added.
China has already extended a helping hand to Greece by agreeing to make substantial investments there. It was also a big buyer recently of Spanish government bonds.
"In the face of the European debt crisis, China has supported vigorous measures by Europe to deal with the crisis, and this policy is unwavering," said Fu, the Chinese diplomat in charge of dealings with Europe.
"It's crucially important for China that Europe maintains overall economic stability and overcomes the crisis and restores growth."
Not all of China's officials have appeared so unnerved about Europe's prospects. The sovereign debt strains weighing down the eurozone could deepen, with Greece and Spain particularly at risk, a senior Chinese central banker said earlier this month. [ID:nTOE688068]
Wen's visit to Europe is also likely to include pressure on China over its currency exchange policies.
Top EU officials are expected to ask him to deliver on Beijing's promise to make its exchange rate more flexible, European officials have said.

"Data la carenza di liquidita' nel mercato locale a causa dell'aumento di capitale da 2,8 mld euro di National Bank of Greece, il trend e' verso un ulteriore ribasso", aggiunge l'esperto.

Germany's Merkel: No Prolongation Of Greece Rescue Fund, EFSF

BERLIN (MNI) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday said Germany opposes a prolongation of the rescue fund for Greece and the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) beyond 2013.
"I want to make this very clear here that there won't be a prolongation of these funds," Merkel said in a speech at an industry conference in Berlin.
Rather, there is a need to stiffen the rules of the EU Stability and Growth Pact, the chancellor said.
"We need a change of treaties in Europe which will make clear that countries which breach the Stability and Growth Pact will be subject to different procedures" than now, Merkel stressed. "Germany will not agree to a simple prolongation" of the rescue funds, she said.

Mi sembra quella scenetta di max tortora che imita muccino in cui una ragazzetta gli dice "Sparisci, non ti voglio mai più vedere" e lui dice "In che senso? Che vuol dire non mi vuoi più vedere? Sii più chiara...". :D
