Only solution for Greece is to leave the eurozone-Roubini

Greek Reporter - 09.12.2010

Nouriel Roubini, professor of economics at the New York University and consultant at the US Congress estimated that the only solution for the restoration of the Greek economy is the devaluation of its currency, which means leaving the euro zone and going back to the drachma. However, he explained that this is not feasible since it presupposes withdrawal from the EU, and pointed out that in such an eventuality, the devaluation of the currency would rise to 50%..
The famous economist, considered that no matter how the budget harmonisation in Greece will be correctly made, the country will not solve the huge state debt problem.

Rehn in Athens on Thursday

BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA - V. Demiris) European Commissioner for economic and monetary affairs Olli Rehn is due in Athens on Thursday, where he will have a succession of meetings with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou, Bank of Greece governor George Provopoulos and the board chairman of the Financial Stability Fund Panagiotis Thomopoulos.

During Wednesday's press briefing in Brussels, Commission spokesman Olivier Bailly said that Rehn's talks in Athens will focus on the effort for financial stabilisation, structural reforms and ways to bring about the recovery of the Greek economy.

Bailly also referred to a visit to Athens on Friday by European Commissioner for regional policy Johannes Hahn, who is to meet Papandreou and members of the government and attend a conference on regional policy with Greece's newly-elected local government officials that take over in January.

EU's Rehn says Europe needs coordinated action

ATHENS | Thu Dec 9, 2010 2:50am EST

ATHENS Dec 9 (Reuters) - The euro zone needs coordinated action to resolve its debt crisis, EU Economics and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said on Thursday.
"We have to take well-coordinated action to safeguard stability in the euro area. The current situation is not a crisis of the euro, Greece is not the only country facing major challenges," Rehn said in a speech in Athens.
Bickering among European Union leaders escalated on Wednesday over a proposal for joint euro zone bonds to overcome the bloc's debt crisis, with Germany saying it opposed the idea on legal and economic grounds.

EU taking 'positive look' at Greek extension

Dec 9, 2010 9:29 AM GMT+0100 Thu Dec 09 08:29:07 GMT 2010
By The Associated Press

VOULIAGMENI, Greece (AP) — Top EU economic official Olli Rehn says the bloc is taking a "positive look" at extending the repayment period of bailout loans that saved the country from default.

Greece is in negotiations to get more time to repay loans worth up to euro110 billion ($145 billion) from the European Union and International Monetary Fund. EU governments had earlier said they were considering pushing back the start of repayments by 4 1/2 years from the current 3 years.

Rehn on Thursday expressed "sincere admiration" at the progress of Greek financial reforms, and says a longer repayment period would add "stability and confidence" to Greece's reforms.

On Tuesday, IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said he supported the extension without imposing additional demands for economic austerity.

Export-friendly plan announced

ANA-MPA/Less than 1/5 of the large export businesses are engaged in exporting activity that exceeds 50 pct of their turnover, Regional Development and Competitiveness Minister Mihalis Chryssohoidis stressed on Wednesday.

He underlined that "we barely utilise the rise recorded in world trade considering that exports correspond to just 8.7 pct of the GDP whereas in Spain are higher than 16 pct, while in Portugal and Holland are over 20 pct and 50 pct respectively.

The extroversion plan includes the adoption of a national brand and the reorganization of agencies such as, the Hellenic Foreign Trade Board (HEPO) and the Export Credit Insurance Organization (ECIO) to acquire new roles and cooperate with the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) and Invest in Greece to guarantee an overall improvement of Greece's image abroad, Chryssohoidis stated.
