Schaeuble: No Need To Increase EFSF΄s Capacity



German Finance Minister said on Monday there was no need to strengthen the Eurozone stability fund, according to Reuters.

Wolfgang Schaeuble added that discussion of the matter was fuelling market speculation over the finances of Eurozone countries.

"In our view, it is not necessary at the present time to increase the capacity of the EFSF," Schaeuble told French newspaper La Tribune in an interview, while the area’s finance ministers are to meet later today to discuss how to give the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) greater lending capacity.

The issue has been in the spotlight for months since it became clear its effective capacity was only about EUR250bn, not EUR440bn, due to guarantees built into the fund to maintain its triple-A rating, according to Reuters.

Schaeuble added that the ongoing debate was sending the wrong signals to financial markets, boosting speculation over the financial situation in Eurozone member states.

Ministro belga Praet verso posto in board esecutivo Bce - stampa

FRANCOFORTE, 14 febbraio (Reuters) - I ministri delle Finanze della zona euro proporranno oggi il belga Peter Praet per il posto vacante nell'executive board della Banca centrale europea.
Lo riporta il giornale tedesco Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, citando fonti dell'Unione europea.
Praet e Elena Kohutikova della Slovacchia sono stati nominati per il posto, ma le chance di Kohutikova sono diminuite dopo una debole performance alle audizioni, D)secondo il giornale.
I membri del parlamento dell'UE hanno riferito a Reuters all'inizio di questo mese che Praet era il loro candidato preferito per sostituire Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell, il cui mandato scade a maggio.
Se Praet si unisse alla Bce, sarebbe il 23mo membro di un Consiglio governativo composto da soli uomini.
I capi di governo della zona euro prenderanno la decisione finale fra i candidati designati da governi Ue per i sei membri che costituiscono il Comitato esecutivo della BCE.

Crisi/ Eurogruppo prepara decisioni per ‘risposta complessiva’. Oggi entra nel vivo dibattito ministri Eurozona su ‘governance’

(TMNews) – Entrano oggi nel vivo, con la riunione a Bruxelles dei ministri delle Finanze dell’Eurozona (eurogruppo), le discussioni sul rafforzamento della ‘governance economica’ e del Patto di stabilità (comprese le nuove procedure contro il ‘debito pubblico eccessivo’) e sulle proposte di aumento della capacità effettiva del ‘fondo salva Stati’ (Efsf) di erogare prestiti, insieme all’allargamento del suo campo d’azione. La riunione sarà allargata alle 17.30 ai ministri degli altri Stati membri dell’Ue per la discussione sulla fisionomia e campo d’applicazione del nuovo meccanismo di stabilità finanziaria permanente (Esm) che sostituirà a partire dalla metà del 2013 l’attuale Efsf. Tutti i ministri dei Ventisette si rivedranno poi domani per il Consiglio Ecofin.

La riunione dell’eurogruppo comincerà con una relazione del commissario agli Affari economici e monetari, Olli Rehn, sull’attuale situazione economica e finanziaria, con uno sguardo che comincia ad essere preoccupato per la tendenza all’aumento dell’inflazione (2,4% a gennaio, secondo Eurostat).

L’obiettivo della riunione è di arrivare a un’intesa sulla sostanza di tutti i temi indicati, in modo da consentire una decisione dei capi di Stato e di governo durante il Consiglio europeo del 24 e 25 marzo, per quella che nel gergo comunitario si chiama la “risposta complessiva” dell’Eurozona alla crisi finanziaria.

Greece not considering PPC stake sale- govt official

ATHENS Feb 14 (Reuters) - Greece does not plan to sell any stake in state-controlled electricity utility PPC (DEHr.AT: Quote), a government official said on Monday, after comments by the cash-strapped country's international lenders last week sparked talk Athens could divest to reduce debt.
"The government's policy of retaining a 51 percent stake in PPC remains intact," said an official at the Energy and Environment Ministry.
On Friday, an EU official inspecting Greek finances suggested that the country sell shares in PPC, the country's biggest utility, as part of a five-year, 50-billion euro privatisation plan.

Athens Market Posts Mild Profits



Athens Exchange attempts to adjust to the news flow on Monday, following the EU/IMF/ECB representatives’ suggestion for the need of a EUR50bn privatization program and the Greek government’s reaction.

In a mild session, in terms of trading volume, the General Index moves on positive grounds since the beginning of the session, while Mytilineos and Marfin Popular Bank top FTSE20’s profits.

Analysts comment that the total amount of privatizations that Greece has to implement has surprised the market and they expect an initial positive impact on listed companies that the state is involved.

They also note that the focus is also on the influence that the privatization program will have on the cabinet’s overall economic policy.

Pegasus Securities expects volatility to remain the market’s key characteristic, while the interest will focus on the listed companies that the state is involved.

“The market’s next support level stands at the 1,660 units and 1,550 being the second one with the latter being of great significance as to the market’s midterm trend, as it is a region marked by the pass of the simple 200-days moving average”, says Pegasus in its morning report.

Across the board, the General Index is at 1635.82 units, up 0.86%. The turnover stands at EUR37mn so far, while a total amount of 91 shares rise, 4 decline and 63 remain unchanged.

Banks move also upwards, currently at 1434.2, up 0.77%. Marfin Popular Bank rises by 2.75%, while Piraeus Bank and Eurobank gain 1.28% and 0.92% respectively.
