ND leader's statements after EPP summit

(ANA-MPA) -- Main opposition New Democracy party leader Antonis Samaras, speaking after the conclusion of the European People's Party (EPP) summit in Helsinki on Friday evening, said the European crisis, the proposal on the European Competitiveness Accord and the strengthening of the European Support Mechanism, as well as developments in North Africa and the Middle East were discussed at the summit.

"Tonight in Helsinki, all the issues of the European crisis were raised. Special emphasis was given to the developments in North Africa and the Middle East. It was to be expected. I stressed mainly that Europe must not run behind the events. It must be the first to show substantive, economic, diplomatic and, above all, political solidarity to these countries. And on the other hand Europe itself must obtain a common, its own, policy on immigration, security, repatriation and prevention. Because this crisis must not in any way worsen the internal economic crisis that countries such as Greece as well are facing," Samaras said.

Greek, Irish Need Eased Aid Terms, EU’s Rehn Tells Handelsblatt

March 07, 2011, 2:39 AM EST

By Tony Czuczka

March 6 (Bloomberg) -- European governments should ease the bailout terms for Greece and Ireland as they discuss ways to end the debt crisis, European Union Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn was cited as saying by Handelsblatt.
Both countries need lower interest rates on aid loans, and Greece’s repayment period should be extended to seven years from four-and-a-half years, the Dusseldorf, Germany-based newspaper quoted Rehn as saying in an interview.
While German Chancellor Angela Merkel is skeptical about easing the bailout conditions, Rehn said there’s a risk that both countries are being overstretched by too-strict loan conditions, Handelsblatt said.

German Govt Adviser: Greece Should Seek Debt Extension -Report

ATHENS (Dow Jones)--The Greek government should seek to extend its debt repayment terms with private creditors, an adviser to German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a newspaper interview Sunday.
Speaking to the paper RealNews, economist Lars Feld, said the German government would support extending the repayment terms on a joint EUR110 billion European Union and International Monetary Fund loan if Greece were to pursue such a strategy.
"Extending the repayment period on the loan is something that Germany could agree with, especially if an extension is also taken into account in negotiations with private creditors," Feld, who is a member of Merkel's so-called Committee of Wise Men, told the paper. "The Greek government should actively pursue such a strategy."
But he added that Germany would oppose lowering the interest rate on that joint loan, something which is also being sought by the Greek government, the paper reports.
EU leaders are due to meet in Brussels March 25 to decide on the framework of a future permanent bailout mechanism for the euro zone to replace a temporary fund cobbled together last year after Greece's debt crisis threatened the stability of the currency bloc.
In the context of that meeting, Greece is hoping EU leaders will agree to extend the repayment terms and lower the interest rate on its EUR110 billion loan, which it received last May to avoid defaulting on its debt.
However, sharp differences remain among euro-zone members about the size and scope of Europe's bailout facility with Germany--Europe's effective paymaster--demanding new budget rules to cut government borrowing and spending across the euro zone.
"Personally, I don't think the German competitiveness pact will find corresponding support, although I believe basic decisions about the European support mechanism will be taken," Feld is quoted as saying.
