I dati precedenti che abbiamo, oltre a non essere assolutamente affidabili, non erano in linea con i metodi - attualmente recepiti - di Eurostat.
Comunque, dobbiamo attendere ancora i dati definitivi, con le eventuali correzioni.

Citi: Crisis Not Resolved Without Debt Restructuring For Greece-Ireland

Citigroup’s Chief Economist Willem Buiter said that debt crisis in Europe won’t be resolved until a number of countries restructure their debt and clean up their banks’ balance sheets, according to Bloomberg.

“It won’t go away until Europe restructures a couple of sovereigns and deals with its dummy banks,” Buiter said in an interview, clarifying that Greece and Ireland may restructure their debt, though not Spain.

“All that’s been done so far is to kick the problem down the road”, he added.

Buiter commented that European leaders’ decision on the increase of the euro-zone’s rescue fund capacity hasn’t solved the underlying problems that led to the crisis.

He said that leaders, who are refusing to soften the terms of the region’s aid package to Ireland, risk forcing the country to restructure its debt unilaterally.

“They have to come up with something for Ireland,” Buiter said. “The Europeans are playing with fire with this brinksmanship”, he added.

Greek Economic Contraction Worsens In Q4

3/18/2011 9:52 AM ET

(RTTNews) - Greek economic contraction deepened in the fourth quarter of 2010, provisional report from the Hellenic Statistical Authority showed on Friday.
Gross domestic product (GDP) fell 6.6 percent annually on seasonally unadjusted basis. It followed a 5.1 percent decline in the third quarter. Greek GDP has been falling since the fourth quarter of 2008 and the latest drop was the fastest since then.
According to a flash estimate released on February 15, Greece's seasonally adjusted GDP dropped 6.6 percent in the fourth quarter.
Today's data showed that total final consumption expenditure decreased 6.7 percent, with general government spending falling 1.9 percent and private consumption dropping 8.6 percent.
Investment fell 7.6 percent. Exports increased 12.8 percent, while imports decreased by 3.2 percent.
Wednesday, the International Monetary Fund said the Greek economy may bottom out in the second half of this year, supported by robust recovery among trading partners.
The IMF sees 3 percent economic contraction this year in Greece. The gradual recovery will start during the latter half of the year and the economy is projected to grow 1.1 percent next year.

Greek Economy Shrank in Fourth Quarter; Data May Be Revised

By Maria Petrakis - Mar 18, 2011 3:45 PM GMT+0100

Fri Mar 18 14:45:44 GMT 2011
Greece’s economy shrank 6.6 percent in the fourth quarter compared with a year earlier, according to the statistics office, which said the figures may be revised because of new calculation methods.
The contraction is based on non-seasonally adjusted data, the Athens-based Hellenic Statistical Authority, or ELSTAT, said in an e-mailed statement today. It didn’t provide seasonally adjusted figures or quarter-on-quarter data.
ELSTAT said the comparison of quarterly data between the years 2000 and 2008 and the years 2009 and 2010 should be treated with “caution” because quarterly general government data are being calculated in a different way. The agency previously reported on Feb. 15 that gross domestic product on a seasonally-adjusted basis shrank 1.4 percent from the third quarter and declined 6.6 percent from a year earlier, for a full-year contraction of 4.5 percent.
Georgiou said the agency was in consultation with Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics office in Luxembourg, over the existing method for the seasonal adjustment of the data, which doesn’t provide satisfactory results.
“The only reason we are doing this is to absolutely not create any liabilities regarding the credibility of our data,” said Andreas Georgiou, president of the Hellenic Statistical Authority appointed by the government to lead the overhaul at the statistics service, in a phone interview. “If we find a technical solution that stands up to peer review we may be able to publish the seasonally-adjusted data the next time we publish quarterly accounts.”
Doubt over the reliability of Greek statistics sparked a revision upwards of Greece’s budget shortfall to 15.4 percent of GDP in 2009 and led to soaring borrowing costs. Greece received a 110 billion-euro ($155 billion) bailout from the EU and International Monetary Fund in May in return for spending curbs, tax increases and other changes, including a promise to overhaul the way it calculates its data.
