Greek PM: Crisis Is Our Responsibility; Speculation Not Helping
PARIS (Dow Jones)--Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou Wednesday said it is Greece's responsibility to get itself out of the crisis and speculation over default and debt restructuring are hampering its efforts.
"It is a Greek responsibility to deal with our own crisis," he said.
Speaking at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Papandreou said Greece is a victim of speculation in markets that move faster than governments.
"Please leave us in peace," he said, adding Greece is on track and has already made impressive achievements. If Greece had more time the first thing it would do is work on structural weaknesses, which were revealed by its entry into the euro zone, Papandreou said.
He also said widening spreads on Greek debt make boosting euro zone competitiveness more difficult and lead to a "spiral of contagion."
