Greek PM: Referendum Possible
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou could decide on conduct of a referendum, although he didn’t determine its subject, during the informal cabinet meeting on Monday.
He also asked for intraparty consensus and postponed the passing of the medium-term program for June 28.
This development is interpreted that he bets on a satisfactory outcome at the European Union Summit on June 25, in order to claim a comfortable adoption of the program, without any unpleasant t surprises by ruling party lawmakers.
In his presentation, the Prime Minister reopened the issue of referendum, but he declined to determine the subject. He stressed two main objectives: firstly, Greece should avoid a default and secondly, stay in euro currency. Regarding the right time for a referendum, he said: “whenever necessary”, asking Minister of Interior Yannis Ragoussis to prepare the legislative framework.
