Greek opposition: No new austerity

English.news.cn 2011-05-25 14:20:19

BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhuanet) -- The main Greek opposition leader is refusing to back additional austerity measures, designed to tackle the country's debt crisis. The New Democracy Party says the changes would only deepen the current recession, despite the European Union's insistence on multi-faceted support.
Top EU finance officials are arguing that Greece needs all of its political groups to back the latest debt-cutting plans, in order to ensure smooth implementation.
They also stress the importance of the Greek opposition's support for receiving the next installment of the bailout due in late June.
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has met with the heads of competing factions to seek consensus, a day after the country announced extra measures to shrink its budget deficit.
But he's being rebuffed by the main opposition New Democracy Party. The party's leader argues the austerity measures will only bring further recession.
Antonis Samaras, Leader of Greek New Democracy Party, said, "If there is no reduction of taxes, together with a reduction of state waste and bold privatizations there will not be a jumpstart to the economy. The society wishes for consensus on whatever is beneficial, but not to anything that will harm the country."
The only head from one of the nation's four main opposition groups to show consensus was the Right Wing Party's leader.
Officials in Athens unveiled a series of privatizations on Monday, part of a goal to raise 50 billion euros by 2015, to pay down a mountain of debt. The scheme starts with divestments in several state firms.
Inspectors are currently reviewing the success and pace of the reforms.
The country's Finance Minister has warned that Greece faces default without the next installment of the bailout.

Greece considers referendum on austerity - reports

ATHENS | Wed May 25, 2011 3:07am EDT

ATHENS May 25 (Reuters) - The Greek government is considering organising a referendum on additional austerity measures after it failed to reach consensus with the opposition, local newspapers reported on Wednesday.
Opposition leaders rejected on Tuesday belt-tightening measures aimed at averting default as lenders piled pressure on Athens for action and for reaching a broad political consensus before considering any extra help.

"According to sources, (Prime Minister) George Papandreou, seeing that a consensus with the head of the main opposition party is not possible along with the very strong objections to new tough measures within (ruling socialist party) PASOK, decided to put on the table the possibility of a referendum," conservative daily Kathimerini said.
Government officials declined to comment on the reports, which were front page news in most Greek newspapers.
Papandreou is meeting President Karolos Papoulias at 0700 GMT. His office did not say what the meeting would be about. Papandreou often makes comments before or after such meetings.
Centre left newspaper Ta Nea said the government was considering to organise a referendum on extra austerity if its EU and IMF lenders agreed to lend it more money to plug funding shortfalls for next year.
"According to sources, the government is mainly considering the possibility of a referendum to approve a new memorandum, provided that the new 60-billion-euros funding is agreed with the (EU/IMF/ECB) troika, in order to deal with the expected lack of access to markets in 2012," Ta Nea wrote.
Paymasters at the European Union have said broad political consensus is necessary for more aid, given the need to plug a funding gap next year.
"The big changes for the country are a national necessity. This is the main reason I am seeking the broadest possible political consensus," Papandreou told Greek businesses on Tuesday after the main conservative opposition said it would not back his policies.
The conservative New Democracy party, which last year voted against the EU/IMF bailout deal, claims austerity is choking the economy and impeding it from growing out of its debt mess.

Greek Government Not Considering Snap Elections -Official

ATHENS (Dow Jones)--Greece does not plan to call early elections, a senior official said Wednesday, rejecting market speculation that the government was considering such a move.
Rumors of a snap election affected both the foreign exchange and derivatives markets in Asian trading early Wednesday as investors reacted to the risk of political uncertainty in Greece as it pushes ahead with unpopular austerity measures.
"There are no plans to call early elections," the official told Dow Jones Newswires. "These rumours are unfounded."
The speculation was prompted, say market watchers, by a meeting scheduled for later Wednesday between Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou and President Karolos Papoulias, one day after Greece's main opposition party rejected the government's latest austerity plan.
That rejection came after a series of meetings Tuesday between Papandreou and the heads of Greece's opposition parties as part of the government's efforts to build a national consensus for the new measures.
According to the official, the prime minister and the president Wednesday will discuss the latest austerity measures and the outcome of Tuesday's meetings.
"Papandreou will inform the president about what transpired with the political chiefs yesterday, but it's mostly a formality," the official said.

FM meets Italian counterpart

ROME (ANA-MPA / Th. Andreadis-Syggelakis) -- Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas met here on Tuesday with his Italian counterpart Franco Frattini.
Droutsas underlined that Italy "stood by Greece from the first moment", adding that Italy's confidence in Greece was underscored in the meetings he had in the Italian capital.
Responding to a question by ANA-MPA, FM Droutsas stressed that the Italian foreign minister underlined Italy's solidarity to Greece and the Greek people and added that "the efforts made by Greece in the past year are being acknowledged, namely the efforts made by the government and the Greek people, in particular".
Droutsas presented to his counterpart the deficit figures showing that it was reduced by 5 percentage points in the past year, as well as, the reforms made in the social insurance system and local government pointing out, however, that "we still have a long way to go".
He also referred to the outcome of Monday's cabinet meeting in Athens and the promotion of the medium-term stability programme and planned privatizations, underlining that Italian companies have expressed interest in investing in Greece.
Greek experts will visit Italy very soon to present investment opportunities to Italian companies. "This is a very important result and message coming from the meeting. It is a tangible proof of Italy's confidence in Greece, its economy and its potential," Droutsas stated.
