NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Natural gas futures rose Monday, touching fresh two-week highs as colder weather forecasts for early March boosted the demand outlook for the heating fuel.
Natural gas for April delivery recently traded 4.7 cents, or 1.2% higher, at $4.052 a million British thermal units on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Futures rose as high as $4.071, the highest intraday price since Feb. 10.
Forecasts turned colder over the weekend, with meteorologists now seeing chilly temperatures spread across many major gas-heating markets.
Temperatures are expected to trend colder-than-normal from the West Coast through the Northwest and upper Midwest March 6-10, with cold across much of the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. thereafter, meteorologists with WSI Corp. said Monday. Mostly average seasonal temperatures are seen in parts of the Southwest and Southeast during the period, the private forecaster said.
Gas futures plunged heading into Thursday's expiration of the March futures contract, as market participants bet that the milder weather on the horizon would dampen gas-heating needs.
But the new front-month April contract climbed by more than 3% Friday as traders viewed the declines as a good opportunity to buy amid slightly colder weather forecasts.
Meanwhile, the number of rigs drilling for gas in the U.S. rose by one last week, to 906, Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI) said Friday. Despite predictions that gas drilling would slow in response to low prices, the count has held steady at levels that are seen leading to increased production.
Gains in drilling efficiency have lowered the break-even cost for many producers, Morgan Stanley analysts said Monday in a research note, meaning output will likely remain high through much of 2011 despite depressed commodity prices.
Overwhelmed by the persistent supply glut, futures are on track for their lowest winter peak since 2001-02.
The Energy Information Administration in its latest outlook saw U.S. marketed gas production increasing by 0.8% in 2011 compared with year-earlier levels.
Meanwhile, physical gas for next-day delivery at the benchmark Henry Hub in Louisiana recently traded at $3.92/MMBtu, up 12 cents from Friday's average price, according to IntercontinentalExchange. Gas for delivery at Transcontinental Zone 6 in New York traded at $5.02/MMBtu, up 6 cents from Friday.
