Dopo la chiusura dell'accordo con Chrysler, Marchionne si appresta a condurre le trattive per acquisire la quota di controllo di Opel da GM.
Da indiscrezioni di stampa Fiat a messo sul piatto un pò meno di 1 mld di euro, cifra non ritenuta soddisfacente da GM.
A quanto pare l'obiettivo di Marchionne è quello di creare un colosso da 5,5-6 milioni di macchine vendute all'anno, la scala che zio Sergio ritiene necessaria per sopravvivere alla crisi.
Tanto di cappello a come Marchionne sta sfruttando la crisi per rinforzare Fiat, il problema è che non vorrei stessero facendo il passo più lungo della gamba. Questa strategia infatti avrebbe perfettamente senso se Fiat fosse in una situazione finanziaria più solida, come Volkswagen o Toyota. Ma Fiat in realtà si ritroverebbe in serie difficoltà se la crisi del settore automobilistico dovesse protrarsi nel 2010. impegnare risorse finanziarie per espandersi potrebbe risultare un'ulteriore aggravante.
Mi viene in mente il parallelo di Bank of America nel settore finanziario... che è stata molto aggressiva con le acquisizioni ( prima Countrywide e poi Merril Lynch) e pochi mesi è dovuta intervenire l'amministrazione USA per tenerla in piedi.
Che Marchionne voglia far diventare di proposito Fiat "too big to fail"?
La vicenda si fa molto interessante, continuo a seguirla dalla finestra, mi sa che entro la fine dell'anno se ne vedranno delle belle.
Fiat says Opel "extraordinary opportunity" -report
MILAN, May 3 (Reuters) - Fiat SpA's (
FIA.MI) purchase of German peer Opel would be "an extraordinary opportunity" for the Italian automaker, Fiat's chairman said in an interview published on Sunday.
A purchase of the troubled German unit of General Motors Corp (
GM.N) would be the "closing of the circle" following its partnership with Chrysler, Luca Cordero de Montezemolo told Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Fiat is set on acquiring Opel after it struck a last-minute deal to buy an initial 20 percent of Chrysler [CBS.UL] on Thursday, just ahead of the deadline imposed by the Obama administration to cement a partnership. [ID:nL1157276]
"It would be an extraordinary opportunity for us. They would be our ideal partners, a very strong group would be born."
Asked if Fiat would look to a deal with France's PSA Peugeot Citreon (
PEUP.PA) to buy GM's Latin American operations if the Opel talks fell through, or if German objections to Fiat as a suitor had been expected, he said:
"Easy, we let Sergio work. What I can say is that we are following a strategy coherently. And then we'll see. We know what our cards are and we will play them."
Marchionne has said Fiat needed a partner to reach output of 5.5 million to 6 million units a year, the scale he believes necessary to survive the car industry crisis.
The deal with Chrysler makes the combined company the world's fifth-biggest car maker, at 4.2 million vehicles a year.
Fiat may have to contend with an offer from Austrian-Canadian car parts maker Magna International Inc (
MGa.TO), which has shown interest in Opel.
Marchionne will meet German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Economy Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg on Monday, a spokesman from the Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
IG Metall union regional leader Armin Schild highlighted the risk union opposition could frustrate efforts to find a buyer for Opel.
In an interview with La Stampa newspaper, Schild, a member of Opel's supervisory board, said he objected to Fiat because cooperation efforts between the two had been unsuccessful and they competed in the same markets.
"They would not integrate, they would cannibalise each other and this would be positive for neither Fiat workers nor Opel workers," Schild said.
German magazine WirtschaftWoche cited sources close to the talks as saying Fiat had made an offer for Opel of less than 1 billion euros ($1.33 billion), which GM considered too small.
The report, which will appear on Monday, said it was not clear if the original offer had since been improved. A spokesman for Fiat declined to comment on the report and GM could not be reached for immediate comment. (Reporting by Ian Simpson; Editing by Hans Peters)
