PMC-Sierra First Quarter 2009 Earnings Conference Call Scheduled for April 23, 2009

PMC-Sierra beats by $0.05, beats on revs Reports Q1 (Mar) earnings of $0.06 per share, excluding non-recurring items, $0.05 better than the First Call consensus of $0.01; revenues fell 15.1% year/year to $102.6 mln vs the $95.8 mln consensus. "In the first quarter of 2009, we experienced strong demand for our wireless and wireline communications products in China. We lowered operating expenses during the first quarter and will maintain our focus on keeping our operating expenses in line with our business opportunities."

Jan 28 (Reuters) - Chipmaker PMC-Sierra Inc (PMCS) posted a quarterly profit that beat Wall Street expectations helped by growth in its enterprise storage and microprocessor businesses, sending its shares up 4 percent in extended trade.
The company, which makes chips used in broadband and storage applications, said fourth-quarter net income increased to $15.1 million, or 6 cents per share, from $8.8 million, or 4 cents per share, a year earlier.
Excluding items, the company posted earnings of 17 cents a share. Revenue rose 15 percent to $139.5 million.
Analysts expected earnings of 15 cents a share, excluding exceptional items, on revenue of $136.9 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

PMC-Sierra (PMCS 8.40, +0.64, +8.25%) late Thursday reported a fourth-quarter net income of $ 15.1 million, or 6 cents a share, compared with $8.8 million, or 4 cents a share, in the same quarter last year. Excluding one-time items, the telecommunications equipment-maker would have reported earnings of 17 cents a share in the latest quarter. Revenue increased to $139.5 million from $120.8 million in the same period a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by FactSet Research estimated a profit of 15 cents a share on revenue of $137 million.

Tony Carbone, analyst at Auriga, has reiterated a Buy rating on communications semiconductor major PMC-Sierra (NASDAQ: PMCS) with a price target of $13.
Carbone believes that PMC-Sierra represents one of the best semiconductor product cycle stories for 2010, with solid growth drivers in enterprise storage and WAN infrastructure. The management has come out with a conservative guidance and Auriga expects the WAN business to continue to at least Q1. The concerns about the company’s China wireless business also appear to be overblown.

Analysts at Barclays Capital maintain their "equal weight" rating on PMC-Sierra (NASDAQ: PMCS), while raising their estimates for the company. The target price for PMCS is set to $9.

PMC-Sierra has reported its 4Q09 results ahead of the estimates, driven by higher-than-expected gross margins and continued operational execution. “PMCS expects operating expenses to remain in the high 50s range through the rest of the year,” according to Barclays Capital.
“Solid execution in Q4 and robust Q1 outlook should boost PMCS’ stock, which has underperformed semis by close to 20% since the end of Q3,” the analysts mention. Barclays Capital has raised its EPS estimate for 2010 from $0.60 to $0.72.
