A special commission of the National Assembly is to deliver on Friday to the National Electoral Council (CNE) the text approved by majority, in which the country calls for a referendum on a constitutional amendment.
The parliamentarians, who approved Wednesday the project to allow the continuous re-election of public posts, will make the initiative official to the electoral authorities. The project had the support of 6.66 million signatures.
After that step, the CNE will certify the document and the entity will have 30 days to call a popular consultation, which probably will take place February 15.
The request, initially to allow the continuous postulation of the Head of State, was extended two weeks ago to governors, mayors, deputies and regional legislators.
The aim is to eliminate from the Constitution the limitation the head of State has of only being postulated twice and those existing for governors, mayors, deputies and regional legislators.
Before a referendum call, the country established two blocs, one for President Hugo Chavez' supporters who defend the Yes option, and another for opposing sectors for the No to the following question:
Do you approve an amendment to articles 160, 162, 174, 192, and 230 of the Constitution of the Republic, processed by the National Assembly, expanding people's political rights, allowing any citizen in an elected post to be nominated as candidate for the same post during the time constitutionally established, his/her election depending only on the popular vote?.
