Petro-state: Venezuela’s cryptocurrency
President Nicolás Maduro says that as of today, Venezuelans will be able to purchase the government’s mysterious cryptocurrency, the petro.
It is yet another promise he will not be keeping. Over the weekend the app made for acquiring the digital token disappeared from the Android platform.
The petro is not sold on any major cryptocurrency exchanges. No shops accept it. A major crypto-rating site ranks it as a “scam”.
It has already been launched twice, first in February and then again in October.
The government’s pitch is that it is an inflation-proof investment, backed by the country’s natural resources.
It was originally pegged to the price of a barrel of Venezuelan oil, with the Venezuelan monthly minimum salary fixed at half a petro, before the government tinkered with the pricing formula.
But in the words of Alejandro Grisanti, a Venezuelan economist: “At the end of the day, the petro does not exist.”

Marco, ho fatto un po' di ricerche in internet e questa di Patricia Janot sembra una FAKE NEWS, nessuna traccia di una sua dichiarazione in tal senso.
Resta il fatto che appena eletto si è mobilitato in prima persona con Obama per far eliminare le sanzioni a Cuba.

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Venezuela's crude production was in "free-fall" and could soon fall below 1 million barrels per day (bpd), the International Energy Agency's Executive Director Fatih Birol said on Tuesday.
Speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of the Africa Oil Week conference in Cape Town, Birol also said that he hoped oil prices would not rise above current levels this year because it would be bad for the "fragile" global economy.
"Venezuela production is in a free-fall and we expect that soon it may go to even below 1 million barrels per day," he said.
OPEC member Venezuela last year produced more than 2 million bpd, but a deep economic and social crisis has seen output plummet as millions flee the South American country.
Asked whether the current oil price of around $73 per barrel was sustainable, Birol said he hoped there would be no further increases this year.
"I hope that prices do not rise again because this will not really be good news for the global economy which is very fragile," he said, as U.S. sanctions against Iran and Washington's trade spat with China add to price volatility.
