Fed starts policy meeting, rate rise expected
WASHINGTON, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve officials on Tuesday began meeting amid wide -- though not universal -- expectations they will raise U.S. interest rates a quarter of a percentage point despite dismal July jobs data.
The U.S. central bank's policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee began its meeting as scheduled at 9:00 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT), a Fed representative said.
Analysts expect the Fed to nudge overnight borrowing costs up a quarter-percentage point to 1.50 percent at the conclusion of the gathering, following on a June rate rise that was the first in four years.
An announcement of the Fed's decision is expected at around 2:15 p.m. EDT (1815 GMT).
Financial markets hungry for clues will comb through the accompanying statement, with some economists expecting a wording change to leave policy-makers room to skip a September rate hike if the economy does not show convincing signs it is recovering from a June stumble.
