Greece's Socialists Take Early Lead In Local Elections


ATHENS -(Dow Jones)- Greece's ruling Socialists have taken an early lead in local elections, official results released late Sunday showed, amid indications many voters abstained from the ballot boxes.

The elections come amid widespread voter discontent and are seen as a referendum on the Socialist government's harsh, three-year austerity program. The government has warned that poor results could force it to call new nationwide polls after only 13 months in office.

With less than 10% of the vote counted, Socialist candidates were ahead in eight of the country's 13 electoral regions--including the key Attica region where some 40% of the population lives--while the opposition New Democracy party was ahead in the remaining five. The results were broadcast on state-run NET television.

In May, Greece narrowly avoided default with the help of a EUR110 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund and European Union in exchange for a three-year austerity and reform program.

That program has led to steep cuts in pensions and public-sector salaries, as well as a raft of new taxes on everything from cigarettes to basic foodstuffs.

The spending cuts and new taxes have also weighed on the economy, which is expected to shrink by 4% this year, while unemployment has rocketed to 12% in July from 9.6% a year earlier and business bankruptcies have soared.

Questo fino agli anni 1995 poteva ritenersi vero.
Ma la popolazione ha cambiato casa e questa dinstizione si è attenuata.
Comunque si puo dire che vale ancora.

La Attica che è una regione comprende tutti i communi anche quello di atene.
Teoricamente il risultato di tutti i communi si deve riflettere sul risultato regionale.
Ma temo che non sara cosi. Le forze sono posizionate diversamente sulla regione.

Greek partial results show ruling Socialists ahead

ATHENS, Greece -- Partial official results from Greece's crucial local polls show the Prime Minister George Papandreou's Socialists are leading in key regional races, making it less likely he will call an early general election in the debt-ridden country.

With 11 percent of vote counted, Papandreou's Socialists were ahead in seven of 13 races for regional governor, including the critical greater Athens area, Greece's largest administrative region.


Papandreou had vowed to call snap elections unless his party won clear backing in Sunday's local vote, saying his government needed public support for the stringent austerity measures he is implementing to bring the country out of a severe financial crisis. However, he has not set a clear threshold for what results he would consider satisfactory.

Proteste di piazza, Tir fermi, sit-in di precari ai piedi dell'Acropoli. Da due settimane il ritorno di una vecchia conoscenza: i gruppi anarchici che mandano pacchi bomba alle ambasciate europee e ai leader, la tedesca Merkel, il francese Sarkozy, l'italiano Berlusconi, che hanno passato la primavera a decidere cosa fare con Atene, malato d'Europa.

In questo clima la Grecia, paese sull'orlo della bancarotta che ha messo in discussione la stessa esistenza dell'euro, è andata a votare oggi per le elezioni amministrative, inevitabile test per il governo di George Papandreou, leader socialista eletto nel novembre 2009 che ha dovuto gestire i conti disastrosi e lanciato un piano di austerità maldigerito dai greci. Lo stesso premier, pur senza dirlo esplicitamente, ha lasciato intendere che considererà la sconfitta una sfiducia a tutti gli effetti e non esclude elezioni anticipate. I primi parzialissimi risultati sembrano premiarlo: secondo circa il 10% dei voti scrutinati, i candidati socialisti sono avanti in otto delle tredici regioni fra cui l'Attica dove vive il 40% della popolazione del paese.
L'eventuale ballottaggio, dove nessun candidato supererà la soglia del 50%, è in programma domenica prossima. Le elezioni riguardano circa 9,8 milioni di elettori su una popolazione di 11 milioni di persone.

Grecia: voto locale; in forte crescita i comunisti, sopra 11%

Forte crescita del Partito comunista (Kke) nelle elezioni amministrative odierne, secondo i dati ufficiali su una media del 15% delle schede scrutinate.

Secondo tali dati il Kke, che guida la rivolta contro l'austerity, otterrebbe una media nazionale di oltre l'11% dei voti, contro il 7,5% alle politiche dello scorso anno. Nella regione cruciale dell'Attica i comunisti stanno al 14,5%.

Il Kke, che aveva chiesto di "punire" il partito di governo per tagli a salari e pensioni, è apparentemente l'unica forza politica che cresce rispetto al voto dell'ottobre 2009.

ATHENS — Greece's ruling Socialists held an early lead in regional polls staged Sunday under Prime Minister George Papandreou's threat to dissolve parliament if his debt-slashing government suffers losses, partial results showed.
The Socialists are ahead in eight out of 13 regions while the opposition Conservatives control the remaining five, an interior ministry spokesman said.
The regional results are based on a ten-percent sample of polling stations nationwide, the spokesman said in televised statements.
"Based on these results, the Socialists should garner 34 to 35 percent of the nationwide regional vote compared to 31-32 percent for the Conservatives," veteran political analyst Ilias Nikolakopoulos told Mega channel.
On a similar sample, the main cities of Athens and Thessaloniki look likely to remain in Conservative hands but the Socialists will have a fighting chance in the second round to be held on November 14.
The ruling party could draw consolation from surging ahead in the ports of Patras and Piraeus and from carrying off the capital of Crete, Iraklion, in the first round.
Papandreou was expected to make an address to the nation and clarify whether he still intended to hold snap parliamentary elections just over a year after winning an emphatic victory over the Conservatives.
Opinion polls released Sunday showed most Greeks frowning upon the PM's early election gambit.
Papandreou had argued that the government needed to reaffirm its popular backing whilst steering through a draconian austerity programme of major tax hikes and pay cuts that have caused six general strikes and waves of protests in the eurozone member.
