I fondi greci dove erano scappati, a Creta o a Cipro?

?

A Creta, comanda Atene.

Socialists lead in Greek regional vote, low turnout

Sun Nov 14, 2010 3:06pm EST

* Socialists seen ahead in Athens and 7 other regions
* Abstention rate hits record high near 55 percent
* EU/IMF officials start inspection visit on Monday
(adds official estimate of results)

By Angeliki Koutantou

ATHENS, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Greece's ruling socialists were leading in a majority of regional run-off elections on Sunday but turnout was a record low, an official estimate showed, as the deeply indebted country prepared for new austerity measures.
The government expects difficult talks with EU and IMF inspectors who may want additional belt-tightening pledges from Athens when they begin an inspection visit on Monday.

Candidates supported by the ruling PASOK party were leading in 8 out of 13 regions, while the conservative New Democracy were ahead in five, said Yannis Karakadas, head of Singular Logic, the polling company hired by the government.

He later said the two parties were neck and neck in four regions where the results were not yet clear.
With nearly a third of votes counted, turnout was a record low 45 percent, reflecting many voters' discontent with the pain inflicted by austerity measures and reforms.

Greek Socialists hold edge in regional polls: early estimate
(AFP)

ATHENS — Greece's battered Socialists on Sunday held a slight edge in the second round of regional elections dominated by austerity measures and an imminent EU-IMF economy audit, early estimates said.
"Out of 13 regions, our estimates give the lead to eight candidates backed by the Socialist party," Yiannis Karakadas, head of the statistics company overseeing the election, said in a televised address.

The Socialist Pasok party had won two of the regions in the opening election round on November 7, and is currently ahead in six more.
"Pasok is winning half of the regions, so Pasok is doing well," Deputy Prime Minister Theodoros Pangalos told Mega television channel.

But Karakadas added that the tally in several areas was within a 1.5-percent error margin and was open to change.
The regional estimate is based on over 30 percent of the vote.

At municipal level, the Socialists looked set to regain the capital for the first time in over 20 years, whilst dropping the main port of Piraeus to the opposition Conservatives.
The race for Thessaloniki, Greece's second city, was too close to call.

Greek Government Extends Lead In Tight Local Elections

By Nick Skrekas and Alkman Granitsas
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

ATHENS -(Dow Jones)- Greece's ruling Socialists appear to have extended their slim lead in a majority of regional races and the country's two largest municipalities amid very tight races, as record numbers of Greeks stayed away from the polling booths in Sunday's second runoff round of local elections.

With 11 out of 13 regions and about 221 municipalities up for grabs, the ruling Socialist party's popularity and legitimacy with voters is again being tested.

According to the country's Interior Ministry and their assigned research logistics firm Singular Logic, with about 20% of the vote counted, ruling Socialist candidates were ahead in eight of Greece's 13 electoral regions. However, the outcome of four regional elections are so close that predictions are on the border of statstical errors and could change in a matter of hours. In the key region of Attica, where half the Greek population lives, the socialist candidate is extending his lead over his main conservative rival to 52.6%. In the second largest region of Central Macedonia the conservative candidate is, as expected, likely to post a comfortable win.

Meanwhile, in the country's largest municipality of Athens, a traditional bastions for the conservatives, there is a accelerating swing to the socialists candidate which has a lead of 51.6%, even if it may not be determinative.

And in an election thus far characterized by upsets from incumbent municipal powers, the conservatives look likely to pull off a surprise win in the port city of Piraeus.

But in Greece's second largest city of Thessalonica, there appears to be a growing momentum by a maverick socialist that could overturn traditional center right dominance of the municipality's long standing centre-right administration.

The elections come amid widespread voter discontent and are seen as a referendum on the Socialist government's harsh, three-year austerity program agreed with the International Monetary Fund and the European Union, which has been heavily criticized by the opposition, center-right New Democracy party.

The level of abstentions has significantly surpassed last Sunday's historic record high of 39% and will surpass 50% in a country where voting is compulsory. In some areas it is the lowest on record since the fall of the military junta in 1974 when democracy was restored to Greece.

Voters appear to have turned their back on the whole political system, putting into question the mandate of more than just the ruling Socialists.
Last Sunday, the ruling PASOK party just edged out the main conservative New Democracy party with a two percentage-point lead nationwide.

Private research polls show that this lead may have widened in the second round to about four percent, even if this is down sharply from the socialists 10% winning margin in last October's national elections.

Grecia, voto: Atene a Papandreou

Greece's Socialists win Athens mayoral race for first time since 1987

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Greece's governing Socialists have won the mayoral race in Athens for the first time in 24 years, scoring an upset in local elections, despite renewed pressure on the crisis-hit nation to further cut spending.
Giorgos Kaminis was declared the winner in Sunday's runoff after conservative incumbent Nikitas Kaklamanis conceded.
The Socialists also won the race for regional governor in greater Athens and were leading nationwide over conservatives who campaigned against the terms of a euro110 billion ($150 billion) bailout loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund and European Union.
