L'Europa, nonostante tutto, sta facendo molto.

Greece Remains One of Germany’s Favorite Vacation Destinations

Posted on 25 March 2011 by Anastasia Miskedaki

Greece is still one of the favorite vacation destinations for Germans. According to research conducted by the B.A.T Research Institute (Stiftung fυr Zukunftsfragen), Greece is in sixth place among the most preferable vacation destinations for Germans. 2011 will see an increase in Greek tourism, specifically for Cretan tourism, according to evidence coming from the exhibitions about tourism that are now taking place in Moscow and Paris.”We have to show in practice that we are good hosts, and that despite the economic crisis in our country, we still provide high quality services to our tourists. We have to show that due to the crisis, our prices are the same or lower and that the vacations in Crete are worth the time and the money” stated the vice-district commissioner of Rethymnon, Mary Lioni.
As evidence shows, the German market and tourism is expected to be very lucrative for Greece this year. Even the most conservative analysts of the tourism market are soberly optimistic and expect an increase in all Greek destinations.

ND severely critical of PM

Main opposition New Democracy (ND) severely criticised prime minister George Papandreou on Friday night over his comments after the conclusion of a two-day EU summit in Brussels.

ND press spokesman Yiannis Michelakis bashed the premier on his criticism of ND's positions, stressing that the main opposition party has a duty to criticise the government's policy that is leading the economy to an impasse, the much more so when its criticism is proving true.

He reiterated the position voiced by ND leader Antonis Samaras that the Memorandum was not working, noting the state revenues of the first two months of the year "which declined by 9 percent instead of increasing by 8 percent as predicted", and put the blame on the government "and all those who supported the Memorandum".

Commenting on the Summit decisions, the ND spokesman recalled Samaras' statement that stabilisation and recovery of the economy, at both national and European level, are without saying correct targets, but cannot be achieved without growth and, mainly, cannot be achieved with permanent recession.

Michelakis further said that countries that are in situations similar to Greece's are displaying much greater ability to negotiate, citing the examples of Ireland and Portugal "which promptly raised capital and thus today can negotiate, unlike the Papandreou government which, last year, neither raised capital when it could nor negotiated anything".

Athens welcomes clarity that NATO leadership will provide

Greece’s role in operations in Libya will not change even though NATO is taking over control of the military effort, Defense Minister Evangelos Venizelos said on Friday.

“The framework we have created with regard to the participation of Greece is stable and will not change on a day-to-day basis,” he said, adding that Athens would help uphold the arms embargo on Colonel Muammar Gadhafi’s regime and provide support for the imposition of a no-fly zone.

“We will respond to requests from allies and partners… and we hope that NATO will take control of operations so there is clarity, transparency and an organized process that we are familiar with.”

On Thursday night, Prime Minister George Papandreou said that the diplomatic effort in Libya should be stepped up. “Now is the time to begin preparations for political and diplomatic initiatives and solutions so that the road can open for a better, more democratic and peaceful Libya for its people,” he said.

Thessaloniki mayor says he only needs half the staff

Boutaris says City Hall's 4,500 employees are too many

Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris has risked provoking the wrath of many of his municipality’s employees by suggesting that he could do without half of them.

Boutaris, elected by a narrow margin in last November’s local elections when he stood as an independent, suggested that the cash-strapped Municipality of Thessaloniki was spending too much on the wages of some 4,500 staff.

“In my opinion, the municipality can operate with half the amount of employees we currently have,” he said. “What is absolutely clear is that public hirings have been used as a way of exercising social policy.”

Boutaris said that he would first try to see if he can get better value for money from the current staff. He also announced that people working for City Hall would no longer get a 75 percent discount on their municipal tax.

Thessaloniki is currently facing trash collection problems as it is finding it difficult to pay gas and repair bills for the garbage trucks.

New austerity plan nearly ready

Finance Ministry working on tax proposal worth 8 billion euros; measures to be ready for troika in early April

By Prokopis Hatzinikolaou

The Finance Ministry is looking into introducing tax measures worth 8 billion euros for the 2012-15 period, which will be presented to representatives from the International Monetary Fund, European Commission and European Central Bank - collectively known as the troika - at the start of April.

Proposals which have been prepared and handed over to the ministry’s top officials relate to tens of measures, including slashing tax reductions for high income earners, introducing a tax on soft drinks and juices, increasing road tax and upping property levies.

At the Finance Ministry, officials have started weighing up each measure against its potential political cost.

One proposal, which was quickly dismissed due to potential public reaction, was the introduction of one-off tax being imposed on all taxpayers, but this was binned due to the limited revenue potential from the move and the strong opposition it would cause.

The first measure being assessed is reducing tax deductions for those who declare an income of above 60,000 to 70,00 euros. There are currently 980 tax deductions, according to Greek law.

The higher income bracket will no longer be able to claim expenses such as medical bills, rent payments, mortgage interest costs and private tuition expenses against their taxable income, under the proposal.

Tax deductible expenses cost the budget some 8 billion euros per year and the government wants to minimize this amount.

Another measure being examined is the government dropping favorable value-added tax rates applicable on the country’s islands.

Despite the government formally denying any such intention, the Finance Ministry is believed to be studying the idea of implementing across-the-board VAT in a move that could bump up revenues by 560 million euros.

Another measure under consideration is allowing taxpayers with real estate asset in excess of 400,000 euros to settle outstanding debts from the 2000-09 period.
