Treasuries Pare Losses on Speculation Greece May Drop From European Union

By Susanne Walker - May 6, 2011 6:35 PM GMT+0200 Fri May 06 16:35:06 GMT 2011

Treasuries pared losses as speclation Greece may leave the European Union drove investors to the safety of U.S. goverment debt.
“One concern is what would happen to euro banks that own the debt, and is it going to be marked down further, creating more of an economic issue,” said Thomas Roth, senior Treasury trader in New York at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities USA Inc.
The euro extended its losses after Der Spiegel magazine reported that debt-strapped Greece is considering withdrawing from the euro zone and reintroducing its own currency, and that the European Commission called a meeting to discuss the move. A spokesman for Luxembourg’s Jean-Claude Juncker, who leads euro- region finance ministers, denied the report.

May 6 (Bloomberg) -- Greece’s possible exit from the euro area isn’t being discussed in the European Union, said Steffen Seibert, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s chief spokesman. “This isn’t on the table and hasn’t been on the table for the German government and isn’t a topic at the European level,” he said by telephone today.

Update-2: Germany Press: Greece Ponders Leaving The Eurozone

BERLIN (MNI) - The Greek government is pondering leaving the Eurozone and introducing its own currency, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported Friday on its website, citing no sources for its claim.
A Greek government official told Market News International that his government "has no plan nor is it currently examining any possibility of leaving the Eurozone."
According to Der Spiegel, Eurozone finance ministers and representatives of the EU Commission will meet this Friday evening in Luxembourg for a secret crisis meeting.
On the agenda of the meeting, along with a possible exit of Greece from the Eurozone, will also be a restructuring of Greece's debt, Der Spiegel wrote. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and his deputy Joerg Asmussen will attend the meeting, the magazine said.
According to Der Spiegel, Schaeuble wants to prevent Greece from leaving the Eurozone at any cost. An internal German Finance Ministry draft warns that a new Greek currency could be devalued by up to 50%, which would drive up Greece's debt to around 200% of GDP. This would make debt restructuring inevitable, the magazine cited from the draft.
An exit of Greece from the Eurozone would severely damage the functioning of the Eurozone, the German Finance Ministry draft warns according to Der Spiegel. International investors would have to fear that in future other Eurozone members might leave the monetary union as well. This could lead to a contagion effect in the Eurozone, the magazine cited further from the draft.
A leading member of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU/CSU-FDP coalition said in a newspaper interview released Friday that he does not rule out a restructuring of Greek debt. "If I look at the development of markets, then this is for me only a question of time and conditions," FDP Secretary-General Christian Lindner told the German daily Die Welt.

Austria unaware of any euro zone meeting on Greece

VIENNA | Fri May 6, 2011 12:25pm EDT

VIENNA May 6 (Reuters) - Austria is unaware of any euro zone meeting on Friday and a breakup of the currency bloc is "absolutely unthinkable", a finance ministry spokesman said after a report that officials would gather to discuss the situation in Greece.
"Austria is a member of the euro zone, we know of no such meeting and haven't been invited, so I conclude that there is no such meeting because I do not believe there can be a euro zone meeting without Austria," spokesman Thomas Waiglein said.
