EURO CDS OPEN: Markets are seeing a mild relief this

First Published Friday, 24 June 2011 07:33 am - © 2011 Need to Know News

EURO CDS OPEN: Markets are seeing a mild relief rally this morning as EU leaders have pledged to rescue Greece in exchange for further deficit reduction measures that will close "black holes". Its difficult to really see that the position is materially different this morning given the ongoing longer term fiscal issues Greece must face. However the markets appear to have some Greece fatigue after a week where the issue dominated sentiment once again. The bigger issue though this week has been the convergence of other peripheral countries spreads towards Greece with markets discounting "restructuring contagion". CDS markets have underperformed this week and look set to end the week on the wides of the recent range.

Belgium PM: EU Could Release EUR1B Quickly To Stimulate Greek Economy

BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme said Friday that the European Union could take measures to release around EUR1 billion from its funds to help stimulate the Greek economy.
"We talked about around EUR1 billion being released very quickly. It's not enormous, but it can help get the Greek economy going again, which it really needs," Leterme said.
Leterme said "very severe budgetary restrictions" must be imposed on Greece but on the other hand, the EU needs to do what it can to help.
"The Greeks can only pay back their loans if their economy works again. For that they have the right to EU" budgetry assistance that "they haven't been using enough" up until now, he told reporters on the sidelines of the European Council.
Leterme is the latest European leader to suggest the EU could use its funding directly to help Greece in some way. Last weekend, Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the Eurogroup of finance ministers, said the EU should exempt Greece from having to match some EU funding for social and other programs to free up cash.

Greek finmin to meet Schaeuble to discuss growth

ATHENS, June 24 | Fri Jun 24, 2011 4:24am EDT

ATHENS, June 24 (Reuters) - Greece's new Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said on Friday he would meet his German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble to discuss how to return Greece's economy to growth after three years of recession. "We have agreed with Schaeuble to meet in Berlin to discuss growth issues," Venizelos told parliament's economic affairs committee.
The minister did not provide a date but he is expected to be in Berlin early next month. Greece clinched the agreement of EU-IMF inspectors on Thursday to its planned new austerity package.

Cds, allargano periferici, dubbi su pacchetto austerità Grecia
