UPDATE 1-Hapag-Lloyd owner Kuehne wants TUI to move on

* Kuehne willing to raise his 15 pct stake in Hapag-Lloyd

Private Capital
* TUI's exit should help needed consolidation of industry
* TUI shares up 4.7 pct on breakup speculation
(Adds investor, trader comments, further details, share)
HAMBURG, Germany, Jan 13 (Reuters) - German entrepreneur Klaus-Michael Kuehne called on TUI AG (TUIGn.DE) to sell its Hapag-Lloyd [HPLG.UL] stake to make room for a new owner and a more stable shareholder set-up at the container shipping line.
"There are surely investors that buy stakes in companies that are still healthy," Kuehne said at the Hamburg club of business journalists, adding he could imagine that Hapag-Lloyd could attract private equity investors.
Hanover-based TUI AG, which owns Europe's largest tour operator TUI Travel (TT.L), sold the majority of Hapag-Lloyd early last year but was forced to keep more shares than it had originally planned to avert a collapse of the deal.
Now TUI controls 43 percent of Hapag-Lloyd with the remainder held by the Albert Ballin consortium of investors that includes Kuehne.
Last September the shipping group requested 1.2 billion euros ($1.75 billion) in state loan guarantees to help see it through the worst of the financial downturn. [ID:nLS343340]
The 72-year-old majority owner of Swiss logistics group Kuehne & Nagel (KNIN.VX) also affirmed in comments embargoed for Wednesday he would like to raise his owm 15 percent stake in Hapag-Lloyd under conditions. Talks have already begun, he said.
"This (Kuehne's comments) may raise hopes that TUI will reduce its stake," a local trader said, commenting on TUI's share price gain.
At 1523 GMT, shares of TUI were up 4.7 percent, while Germany's blue-chip index was up 0.5 percent.

RISING RATES
Kuehne said that the worst was over for the container shipping industry, adding that freight rates have been on the rise since the middle of last year.
Nevertheless, the crisis is not yet over and it remains clear that further consolidation is necessary among container shippers like Mediterranean Shipping Co, France's CMA CGM, Cosco (0517.HK), Orient Overseas (0316.HK), Neptune Orient (NEPS.SI) and industry number one Maersk Line (MAERSKb.CO), he said.
Many shipping lines are in negotiations with shipyards in South Korea and China to either cancel their orders or postpone delivery.
Hamburg-based Kuehne, who had once planned to buy a blocking minority of Hapag-Lloyd, said any increase in his stake would depend on whether all shareholders were working together to achieve the goal of stabilising the shipping company.
A spokesman for TUI pointed to previous statements that the company would sell its stake in Hapag-Lloyd eventually, adding there were currently no talks on the matter.
While TUI can sell its shares to Albert Ballin no earlier than January 2012, it can offer the stake to other investors prior to that date.
