Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Natural gas futures were little changed as revised forecasts showed colder-than-normal weather that may spark greater demand for the heating fuel.
Gas futures were steady as a midday update to the National Weather Service’s Global Forecast System weather model showed below-normal temperatures in the eastern and central U.S. from Feb. 5 through Feb. 9. Earlier forecasts had shown mostly normal temperatures in those regions.
“The weather looked a little cooler than this morning’s outlook,” said Kyle Cooper, director of research for IAF Advisors in Houston. “"Mother Nature has just been incredibly bullish overall in the last 13 months.”
Natural gas for February delivery fell 0.1 cent to $4.472 per million British thermal units at 1:27 p.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The futures have declined 19 percent from a year ago. February options expire today.
The low temperature in New York on Feb. 8 may be 24 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 4 Celsius), 3 degrees below normal, according to AccuWeather Inc. in State College, Pennsylvania.
About 52 percent of U.S. households use natural gas for heating, according to the Energy Department.
The first round of a two-part storm dropped snow across the northeastern U.S. today, and forecasters said the New York and Boston areas may be digging out from under 8 inches or more early tomorrow.
Today’s storm was the seventh this month to leave an inch (2.5 centimeters) or more of snow in Central Park, according to National Weather Service data.
Cold weather may reduce the surplus of gas in storage over the five-year average, analysts predicted. The Energy Department tomorrow may report a reduction in gas stockpiles of 170 billion cubic feet in the week ended Jan. 21, according to the median of 16 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. The five-year average drop for the week is 152 billion, the department said.
U.S. gas inventories for the week ended Jan. 14 totaled 2.716 trillion cubic feet, 2.8 percent above year-earlier levels and 1.9 percent above the five-year average, the department said last week.
