Chiuso argomento.

Turkey CDS update by jbchevrel, December 14, 2021
Turkey’s currency keeps depreciating at a rapid pace, inducing further widening in the cost of CDS protection. This week, the lira lost -4% and the 5-year CDS spread widened by 25bp ish to 525bp area. Friday, S&P Global Ratings lowered the outlook on their sovereign credit rating to negative, citing risks from the “extreme currency volatility.” Indeed, $TRY is up c75% since September low of 8.25. Lira spot surpassed 14 and is 14.4 at the time of writing. The monetary authority CBRT sold foreign exchange in the currency market to tame losses. The CBRT didn’t link it to policy rates and even cited “unhealthy” price formations in the market. The CBRT is forecast to cut interest rates this Thursday [-100bp to 14%] despite rising inflation. Turkey’s Treasury & Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati told Haberturk newspaper on Sunday that the government remains determined not to raise rates, as President Erdogan has made. Meanwhile, indexes retreated from the tights ahead of a busy week of central bank decisions in most major economies, echoing other risky assets. The Fed is expected to move more quickly to wind down its bond-buying program and signal that it will raise interest rates next year to tame inflation [November CPI was the fastest annual rate since 1982].
