Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ha revocato la raccomandazione automatica di somministrare il vaccino a tutti i neonati alla nascita. Con una votazione 8 a 3, è stato stabilito che i bambini nati da madri negative all’epatite B potranno ricevere la prima dose non prima dei due mesi, e solo dopo una valutazione condivisa tra medico e famiglia. Rimane invece in vigore la vaccinazione alla nascita per i neonati di madri positive o con stato sierologico ignoto.

La decisione è maturata dopo una riunione tutt’altro che pacifica. Tre membri del comitato hanno votato contro, sostenendo che la nuova linea aumenterebbe il rischio per i bambini. Il dibattito è stato segnato da scontri durissimi tra chi difende l’impianto vaccinale tradizionale e chi, invece, ha sollevato obiezioni sulla solidità delle prove di sicurezza nei primissimi giorni di vita. La seduta è stata segnata da interventi aggressivi, difese apodittiche dell’“efficacia e sicurezza” del vaccino e continui tentativi di ridurre le critiche a semplice disinformazione o scetticismo ideologico.
