US Treasuries mixed as long end edges higher

NEW YORK, June 27 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury debt prices were narrowly mixed in early New York trade on Monday, as a quiet market focused on the Federal Reserve meeting and a rush of important data later in the week.

Investors also awaited a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago later on Monday at noon (1600 GMT) on manufacturing in the Midwest region, but were generally biding their time ahead of a Fed rate meeting expected to deliver another quarter percentage point hike on Thursday.

"The big question is what's the wording of the Fed policy statement going to be," said one Wall Street bond trader, noting that should help traders gauge the possible future course of U.S. monetary policy.

The 10-year note <US10YT=RR> was 1/32 higher to yield 3.91 percent. On Friday, benchmark yields fell to 3.907 percent, the lowest since June 8 after signs of weakness in a May durable goods report sparked a rally. The two-year note was 1/32 lower, yielding 3.60 percent, up from 3.58 percent on Friday.

With the long end of the bond market a touch higher and the short end a bit lower, the spread between two- and 10-year notes compressed to 32 basis points from 34 late on Friday, keeping in focus the issue of low long-term yields that has preoccupied the market for much of this year.

The five-year note <US5YT=RR> was flat to yield 3.70 percent, and the 30-year note <US30YT=RR> was 1/32 higher to yield 4.22 percent, about where it was on Friday.

Another quarter percentage point rate increase at the Fed's June 29-30 meeting would put the benchmark federal funds rate that banks charge each other at 3.25 percent, and would be its ninth consecutive increase over the past year.

While that move is well discounted, markets will sift through the Fed's statement for clues as to whether the monetary tightening cycle that started a year ago is nearing an end.

In addition to pouring over the Fed's post-meeting statement, traders will look closely at Thursday's May release of the central bank's favorite inflation gauge -- the core personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index.

Friday brings the Institute for Supply Management's reading on nationwide manufacturing in June, which will give the market the surest sign of whether activity is still slowing down at U.S. factories.

Markets have also been preoccupied with oil prices, which rose to a fresh record high above $60 a barrel <CLc1> as robust U.S. demand strained global production and refining capacity.

Analysts have been more focused on growth dampening effects of oil's rally, rather than its potential to spur inflation, and say it could play a role in Fed policy.

"The longer the oil price remains at these levels that could give the Fed reason to pause," said Tristan Hanson, strategist at Cazenove.
