PARIS (Dow Jones)--Euro-zone government bonds were lower late Monday, giving
up early-session gains after better-than-expected U.S. economic data.
Around 1525 GMT, the September bund future was trading at 119.48, down 0.21
from Friday's closing and from the key 120.00 level reached earlier in the
session.
"The market had tested resistance levels before selling off on the
much-better-than-expected New York Empire State Manufacturing index," said a
dealer with a U.S. bank in London.
The index rose to 26.8 in June from 10.6 in May, far above the reading of 7.5
expected by economists.
Yields were slightly up on the euro-zone curve, especially at the front end,
and the curve flattened slightly at the very long end.
Comments from Bundesbank President Ernst Welteke in a German newspaper that
another rate cut in the euro zone isn't necessary at the moment weighed very
slightly on bond prices, dealers said.
"His comment came after many others but it hasn't helped the market," said a
trader.
The two-year/10-year German spread was trading at 157 basis points, from 158
basis points late Friday.
But the curve flattened more on the very long end, with the ten-year/30-year
German spread narrowing three basis points to 92 basis points.
"We have seen buyers of very long maturities after the U.S. data," said a
French dealer.
The euro was trading at $1.1852 at 1500 GMT, down from $1.1932 earlier Monday
and from $1.1867 late Friday in New York.
European stock markets were up late Monday, with the CAC-40 trading up 1.17%
and the German Dax up 1.62%.
