Greek Stocks’ Annual Losses Reach 35.6% in 2010



Athens Stocks moved on negative ground in the last session of the year, as the General Index ended at session lows, on a turnover of just 37.3 million euro.

National Bank and Alpha Bank were under pressure, as they fell by 2.58% and 2.31% respectively.

There is no major news from Friday’s session, which closed at 15:20 local time. Accumulation and low turnover were key features as expected. Analysts forecast a gradual strengthening in trading activity next week, but also expect caution and investors to avoid risk.

In this context, the developments regarding the Greek public debt and the implementation of the fiscal adjustment are still on spotlight, putting further pressure on stocks and indices, possibly dragging the market to new lows.

Analysts claim that a short-term and small positive reaction cannot be ruled out, but a fundamental change in Greek market won’t be possible, unless investors are convinced by further evidence of support from the European Union.

The release of the fourth installment of the loan remains a cause of speculation as it is considered to be uncertain, putting the Greek government bonds on pressure.

Across the board, the General Index closed at 1413.94 points with losses of 0.70%, on a turnover of just 37.34 million euro. Annually, Athens Stock Exchange declined by 35.62%. A total amount of 79 shares rose, 59 recorded losses and 163 remained unchanged.

Banks ended at 1250.99 points, down 1.34%, while they had been up by 0.85% intraday. Eurobank and Bank of Cyprus retreated by 1.32% and 0.77% respectively, while Marfin Popular Bank climbed by 3.6% and Piraeus posted marginal gains of 0.27%.

Soluzione inevitabile: eurobond o soluzione equivalente.

La proposta degli eurobond contiene anche qualche insidia per i bondisti.
Comunque, per il momento, è da accantonare.
Rimaniamo fermi alla posizione ufficiale del duo Merkel/Sarkozy: sulle nuove emissioni di tutta l'area Euro clausole di subordinazione a partire dal 2013.
Niente "ristrutturazione" su tutto il vecchio circolante.
Poi in corso d'opera vedremo se non cambieranno posizione ...

Tecnicamente la soluzione è molto valida, non credo che vi siano alternative e comunque non vedo grandi rischi per i detentori degli eurobond: se non quelli connessi ad obbligazioni con la tripla A (AAA).
Del resto quali sono le soluzioni proposte dagli avversari? Se non la ristrutturazione del debito e quindi la morte dell'euro. Certo la ristrutturazione riguarderebbe solo le nuove emissioni: ma se non si adottano misure efficaci per contrastare la speculazione e quindi rendere proibitivo il finanziamento del debito, inevitabilmente anche le vecchie emissioni saranno coinvolte nel necessario taglio. Insomma, se vogliamo salvare l'euro, gli eurobond o soluzioni equivalenti sono inevitabili. E vedrai gentile tommy271 che una buona idea prima o poi si impone (speriamo prima che poi ..). Greece in Talks on Extending Debt Repayment: Source



ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece is in talks with commercial banks on extending the repayment of its outstanding debt, in line with a similar plan to stretch out paying back its EU/IMF bailout, an Athens weekly reported on Friday.

Fears that the overborrowed country may restructure its debt after the 110 billion euro emergency funding ends in 2013 are keeping yield spreads at high levels, despite the government's repeated assurances that no such move is on the table.
More than 70 percent of Greece's outstanding debt is held in foreign portfolios.

The Realnews paper said former European Central Bank Vice-President Lucas Papademos, who currently advises Prime Minister George Papandreou, was handling the talks with banks and funds holding the debt-ridden country's bonds.
The finance ministry would not comment on the report.

"The discussions on a parallel extension of the repayment period of the debt owed to the private sector are being conducted by ... Lucas Papademos who has been making rounds between Berlin, Franfurt, London and Brussels recently," the paper said without quoting any sources.

It said the plan for a mild restructuring calls for a repayment extension of 10 up to 30 years, with the focus on paper maturing in 2013 to 2015.

Greece will have until 2021 to repay its 110 billion euro ($145.7 billion) EU/IMF bailout loan, the country's finance minister said last month after an informal deal reached at a meeting of euro zone finance ministers.

Policymakers hope the move will help dilute fears that Athens will opt for debt restructuring after the three-year EU/IMF funding ends in 2013. An easier-to-service repayment plan can give the economy more time to return to growth.
Greece's public debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to hit 152.6 percent next year or 348 billion euros based on the government's 2011 budget.

In November, Papademos said he was against a debt restructuring in Greece or in Europe.
"The debt restructuring that is currently debated is not a desirable solution, neither for Greece nor for the eurozone," he said in a speech in Athens. "It is not necessary and it is not inevitable.

Greece's finance minister has consistently ruled out the possibility of debt restructuring, saying it is not on the table.
Yield spreads of Greek government bonds over German Bunds remain near peaks despite the fiscal progress Greece has made in recent months. On Friday the spread of 10-year Greek government paper stood at 960 basis points.
Athens is aiming to cut the budget deficit to 7.4 percent of GDP next year from 9.4 percent in 2011.

Stock, vedo che anche tu osservi bene ...
Sia per l'articolo di Ta Nea, sia rispetto agli incontri "riservati" di Papademos non è giunta nessuna smentita.
Si potrebbe pensare che sarà quasi certamente questa la strategia della Grecia qualora il supporto da parte UE dovesse mancare.
Chiaro che, a questo punto, si gioca pesante.
La prossima tranche del prestito è a febbraio.

In the eastern Mediterranean nation of 11 million, New Year’s Day many celebrations are influenced by local folkloric traditions, the Orthodox Church and the occasion of the feast day of Aghios (St.) Vassilios, who in Greece substitutes for St. Nicholas as the embodiment of Santa Claus.

One of the most quintessential of all New Year's customs in the Hellenic world has its roots in Greco-Roman traditions. A traditional cake (vassilopita) made on New Year’s Eve is cut in the presence of the entire family on New Year's Day. The ancient Greek Kronia or the Latin Saturnalia were celebrated with the preparation of sweets and cakes. A silver or gold coin was baked inside the cake and whoever found the coin in their piece was the lucky one for the coming year. (ANA-MPA)

The Eastern Orthodox Church linked the vassilopita tradition with the story of St. Vassilios, who in order to protect his parish of Caesarea in Cappadocia, in modern-day central Asia Minor, from the attacks of hostile tribes, gathered all gold coins and other valuables the people had in their possession to appease the would-be attackers. When an attack failed to materialise, Vassilios proposed returning the valuables in a manner that would disperse the riches as evenly as possible -- baked within cakes.

Greece PM hopes for end of recession in 2011

ATHENS, Dec. 31 (Xinhua)-- The New Year will be the last year of recession in Greece, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said in a New Year's message on Friday.

"If we work together, if we continue the effort which started in 2010, insisting on major changes, 2011 will be the last year of recession and in 2012 our country will return to growth, so that in 2013 we will have left behind the mistakes that led us to the current crisis," said Papandreou in an article printed on newspaper Sunday's Ethnos.

Debt-ridden Greece has implemented a painful austerity and reform program since spring, when it narrowly escaped bankruptcy with the help of the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

By 2014, after the end of the three-year program, Athens aims to slash a budget deficit which stood at 15.4 percent of GDP last year to less than three percent through bold fiscal and development measures.

Necessary changes will be made so that Greece will eventually have a sustainable economy with social justice, Papandreou said, noting that the aim is that "all Greeks will be proud of the country, confident for their future and the future of their children."
