Deposits migration seems to have halted

The outflow of Greek deposits from local to foreign banks seems to have ceased, according to top bank officials.
The officials explain that deposits held by domestic lenders may have shrunk during the second half of 2010, but put this down to the country’s recession and the shrinking of incomes rather than the flight of capital to foreign shores.
The total reduction in deposits at Greeks banks throughout 2010 exceeded 13 percent, or 30 billion euros, but the first half of the year was very different to the second.
“The flight of deposits to foreign banks in the first six months of 2010 because of worries for the country’s fiscal state has stopped completely,” stressed Nikolaos Karamouzis, the deputy chief executive officer of Eurobank EFG.
“In the second half there was a slowdown in the rate of deposit reduction and the situation has now stabilized. Preliminary data for December actually show that at Eurobank we had a small increase in deposits,” he added.
Businesses have dramatically reduced their credit transactions, opting for cash instead. Along with the drop in the number of new loans issued, this has forced them to use their deposits in order to survive.
“Nowadays, any reduction in deposits is exclusively due to the recession. Because of the shrinking of incomes, households and enterprises are turning to their deposits either to respond to their obligations to the tax authorities or to maintain their standard of living,” explained Karamouzis.
“Deposit balances have now stabilized, while the domestic banking system remains healthy and robust,” said Piraeus Bank CEO Stavros Lekkakos, while Alpha Bank’s general director Giorgos Aronis stressed that people trust local lenders: “The drop in deposits in the second half of the year is due to the recession and the inescapable decline in revenues. It would be impossible for deposits to increase while incomes fall. What is most important, though, is that trust in the local banking system remains strong.”

Shut down for 48 hours...



Six nightclubs in central Athens have been shut down for 48 hours for violating tax laws, according to the Finance Ministry. A total of 15 bars and clubs were audited by the financial crimes squad (SDOE), which spotted 516 tax law violations, the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

PM sees E-bond idea gaining fans

Papandreou says EU paper could reduce tensions in markets, not a substitute for fiscal adjustment

Support is rising for the creation of common eurozone bonds, or E-bonds, to enable countries such as Greece to borrow more cheaply, Prime Minister George Papandreou said in Paris yesterday.

Addressing a French Economy Ministry conference on reviving the global economy, Papandreou said jointly issued eurobonds could help overcome the single currency area’s sovereign debt crisis. Germany and France, the two biggest economies in the 17-nation eurozone, have so far firmly opposed the idea.

“There is growing support for the issuance of eurobonds as a financial instrument that can help Europe achieve its objectives,” Papandreou said, referring to proposals by Eurogroup chairman Jean-Claude Juncker and Italian Economy Minister Giulio Tremonti. “Eurobonds will help reduce growing tensions in the sovereign markets. Eurobonds are not a substitute for this necessary adjustment we are making in countries including my own.”

Berlin and Paris argue that issuing eurobonds at a single interest rate would raise their own borrowing costs and remove a key market incentive for fiscal discipline in countries with high debts and deficits.

Papandreou said there was no room to stimulate the economy at the national level, “but room does exist at the level of the European Union.” He continued, “The European Union has great possibilities if we compare it to the United States, which has huge federal debt. There is no such debt at the EU level.”

Meanwhile the first issue of bonds by the European Union on Wednesday to fund its bailout of Ireland attracted demand of nearly four times the offer, with 20.8 billion euros bid for 5 billion euros’ worth of bonds. The yield, or rate of return paid to investors on the five-year bonds, was around 2.59 percent, at the lower end of expectations. The European Commission said that the effective rate on the loan for Ireland will be 5.51 percent – composed of the cost of borrowing for the EU at 2.59 percent plus a margin of 2.925 percent agreed in early December. Although the 2.59 percent yield was above that paid by eurozone countries with solid finances, even plus the EU margin payment, the money proves much cheaper for Dublin when compared with rates of around 7.8 percent on Irish five-year bonds.

Βρισκόμαστε σε καλό δρόμο και σύντομα θα ανακτήσουμε την αξιοπιστία των αγορών, επεσήμανε σε συνέντευξή του στην οικονομική εφημερίδα Wall Street Journal ο υπουργός Οικονομικών Γιώργος Παπακωνσταντίνου. Ο κ. Παπακωνσταντίνου υπογράμμισε ότι οι στόχοι της κυβέρνησης για την αύξηση των εσόδων μέσω της πάταξης του «χρόνιου προβλήματος της φοροδιαφυγής» θα επιτευχθούν στο τέλος του έτους ενώ έκανε ιδιαίτερη αναφορά στη φορολόγηση της ακίνητης περιουσίας και την κατοχή σκαφών αναψυχής.

Mr. Papaconstantinou sottolineato che il governo gli obiettivi di crescita dei ricavi attraverso la repressione di "cronica problema di evasione fiscale "si riunirà a fine anno e ha fatto riferimento particolare alla tassazione delle proprietà e del possesso di imbarcazioni da diporto.

«Τα μέτρα είναι σκληρά αλλά δεν θα μπορούσαμε να διαιωνίσουμε μια προβληματική κατάσταση» ανέφερε ο έλληνας υπουργός.​

"Queste misure sono dure, ma non siamo riusciti a perpetuare una situazione problematica", ha detto il ministro greco.

Υπογράμμισε ακόμα ότι οι ξένες επενδύσεις από την Κίνα, το Ντουμπάι, το Αμπού Ντάμπι ή άλλους ευρωπαίους επενδυτές είναι ευπρόσδεκτες και για το λόγο αυτό βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη η διαδικασία επιτάχυνσης και απλοποίησης των σχετικών διαδικασιών.​

Inoltre sottolineato che gli investimenti stranieri provenienti da Cina, Dubai, Abu Dhabi e gli altri investitori europei sono i benvenuti e per questo motivo è in fase di accelerare e semplificare le procedure.

«Στο τέλος της διαδικασίας θα έχουμε τα πιο υγιή δημοσιονομικά στοιχεία» δήλωσε χαρακτηριστικά ο κ. Παπακωνσταντίνου αναφερόμενος στην εν εξελίξει αναθεώρηση των δημοσιονομιών από τη Eurostat.​

Trichet, serve salto di qualità in applicazione patto stabilità

WILDBAD KREUTH, Germania (Reuters) - Il presidente della Banca centrale europea Jean-Claude Trichet ha sottolineato che serve un salto di qualità nella forma e nell'implementazione del patto di stabilità, spiegando che le regole di bilancio dell'Unione europea dovrebbero essere più severe di quelle proposte dalla Commissione.
Il numero uno della Bce ha inoltre chiesto ai governi di consolidare le proprie finanze e ha aggiunto che non vede pericolo di inflazione nella zona euro.
"L'Europa non è diventata una comunità dell'inflazione, né lo diventerà" ha detto Trichet, parlando a un evento organizzato dal partito conservatore bavarese nel sud della Germania, secondo quanto appare nel testo del suo discorso.
