Greek Defense Min. Seen Becoming Next Finance Minister: Press

ATHENS (MNI) - Greece's Defense Minister Evangelos Venizelos will be named as the new finance minister, replacing George Papaconstantinou in a government reshuffle expected to be announced later today by Prime Minister George Papandreou, according to Greek media reports.
Evangelos, the top political rival to Papandreou for leadership of the Pasok (Socialist) party, will also be named vice president of the government, the reports said. The appointment of Evangelos to the sensitive and currently unpopular finance portfolio is seen as a political maneuver by Papandreou to manage any challenge to his leadership from Evangelos.
Papaconstantinou has become extremely unpopular in Greece, in large part because he is directly responsible for overseeing a draconian austerity plan that has brought tens of thousands of protesters into the streets almost every day for the past month. The outgoing finance minister is expected to be offered another, lower profile, cabinet post, the press reported.
After naming his new government, Papandreou is expected to seek a vote of confidence in Parliament. That will be a key test of whether he will be able to secure passage of a new set of deficit-cutting measures totaling E28 billion and a E50 billion privatization plan.
Their approval by the end of this month is a condition imposed by the EU and the International Monetary Fund for disbursement of a E12 tranche of Greece's E110 billion bailout package, without which the country will be unable to meet financial obligations coming due in mid-July and would be forced to default.

Gaudente... ? :)

ECB's Wellink Repeats Call For Doubling EU Rescue Fund: FT

FRANKFURT (MNI) - European Central Bank Governing Council member Nout Wellink repeated his call for doubling Europe's E750-billion bailout fund in a newspaper interview published Friday.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Wellink underlined the ECB's opposition to any measure involving private investors in a new Greek bailout that could result in a "credit event" or technical default of Greece.
Increasing the funds available would show markets how committed governments are in defending the euro and prevent "contagion effects," Wellink argued.
"That safety net should be large enough to frighten the markets and to convince the markets that governments are prepared to really defend, to the end of their days, Europe as it is and the monetary union," Wellink said.
The increase in funds would also give "ammunition to solve the present problem," he said.
In a previous interview with Dutch newspaper Financieele Dagblad that, Wellink had also pushed for the rescue fund to be increased if private investors were pressured to contribute to additional aid for Greece.
In the FT interview, the central banker criticized Eurozone politicians for being slow to react to the debt crisis, accusing them of "only talking and talking" instead of treating the problem.
"My strong personal feeling is that the rest of Europe should defend Greece and that this is possible," he said.
Wellink stressed, however, that the ECB could no longer financially support Greece. "There are constitutional limits," he said. "We are not on Earth to finance governments. That is forbidden."
