Croatia's bank loans grow by 1.6% y/y at end-July

Croatia's bank loans growth accelerates to 1.6% y/y at end-July. Loans extended by the Croatian commercial banks increased by 1.6% on the year to HRK 280.5bn (EUR 37.3bn) at end-July, central bank data showed. Thus, their growth accelerated from the 1.3% annual increase recorded in the previous month.
On a monthly basis, the loans rose by 0.8% following a drop of 0.5% in June. Household loans inched down 2.6% on the year to HRK 120.4bn at end-July. Most of them were consumer credits, which totalled HRK 58.5bn, down by 2.1% on the year. Second ranked other types of credits to households, whose value rose by an annual 0.1% to HRK 51.4bn. Loans to the private sector fell by 3% on the year to HRK 103bn at end-July. Loans to the government grew by 20.2% on the year to HRK 42.8bn. Loans to financial institutions continued to increase significantly by 54.6% on the year to HRK 11.2bn, mainly due to the extended credits to the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development (HBOR). The combined value of credits accounted for 77.9% of the projected 2012 GDP, according to IntelliNews calculations, which compares with 79.1% of GDP a year earlier.
