Cold to Remain in Midwest
Fri Nov 14, 2014 09:16 AM CST
OMAHA (DTN) -- Very cold conditions through next week in the Midwest and a mostly favorable pattern in central Brazil are the primary weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.
COLD WAVE CONTINUES IN MIDWEST
The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a continued very cold pattern in the Midwest during the next week to force winter wheat into dormancy. Some of this crop has not been planted and is not well-established due to late planting. Snow over the western Midwest during the weekend will likely bring some disruptions to late-stage row-crop harvest.
WEEKEND COLD FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS
Across the Southern Plains, below- to much-below-normal temperatures during the next seven days will put the winter wheat crop into dormancy. Most of this crop is well-established going into winter. Cold temperatures for this time of the year will increase stress to livestock. Snow is possible as well during Saturday, but the heaviest snow should fall east of the key feedlot areas of the southwestern Plains.
COLD BUT DRIER IN NORTHERN PLAINS
In the Northern Plains, recent snow over southern areas caused some harvest disruptions. Mostly dry conditions during the next week will be more favorable for the remaining harvest in most areas.
CONTINUED COLD IN DELTA
In the Delta, cold temperatures and limited precipitation during the next seven days should favor the remaining harvest. Cold weather will slow winter wheat planting and development and may put some of the crop into dormancy, especially in northern areas.
PROMISING RAIN CHANCE FOR CENTRAL BRAZIL
In central Brazil crop areas, episodes of showers will favor developing soybeans over Mato Grosso and portions of Goias during the next seven days. Meanwhile, drier and at times somewhat hotter weather may be more unfavorable for crop areas of Mato Grosso do Sul during this period.
DRY WEEKEND FOR BRAZIL COFFEE BELT
In southeastern Brazil, recent showers and cooler temperatures will favor flowering coffee trees and developing sugarcane. Drier weather moves into Sao Paulo Friday and into Minas Gerais Saturday. Dry weather until at least Wednesday of next week may be somewhat unfavorable for both coffee and sugarcane.
BENEFICIAL PATTERN IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL
In Argentina and southern Brazil, drier and warmer conditions will improve the prospect for planting and early growth of soybeans and corn. A drier trend also favors the wheat crop in Argentina and improves conditions for the maturing crop in southern Brazil. Longer-range charts suggest that rain may return to the region during the middle to latter part of next week, which in some areas would not yet be welcome.
VARIABLE MOISTURE CHANCES FOR RUSSIA
The forecast for Russia and Ukraine crop areas shows mostly dry weather and variable temperatures during the next five days. The longer-range charts feature some better precipitation chances for Ukraine and south Russia during next week.
