China introduced provisional tariffs of between 30.6% and 39% on imports of European brandies just days after the European Union approved additional duties of
up to 35% on Chinese electric vehicles.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said that the temporary anti-dumping measures will take effect on October 11. It added the decision was reached following an investigation which showed that "the domestic brandy industry was threatened with substantial damage, and that there was a casual relationship between dumping and threat of substantial damage" and insisted the move was in line with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and Chinese laws.
Earlier, the European Commission decided to impose the tariffs on electric vehicles despite failing to secure a majority among member states, with many abstaining from the vote and several, including
Germany, opposing the move. The Commission
insisted its measures were in line with its WTO obligations and warranted no retaliation.
