DJ Nybot FCOJ Review: Liquidation Extends Losses To 1-Month Low

By Nicole Wyckoff
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Dow Jones)--Frozen concentrated orange juice futures
tumbled once again Tuesday on the New York Board of Trade as liquidation
continued, setting off sell stops.
Sep settled 485 points lower at 61.15 cents a pound, while Nov fell 480
points to 61.60c.
Since the close of business on Friday, the Sep contract has lost 1,000
points. The contract fell to a one-month low of 61.00c Tuesday, a level not
seen since June 24 when it hit 60.70c.
Early in the session, Sep attempted to rally and hit a daily high of
67.25c. However, when the market was unable to push above those levels market
participants started to sell.
The trade was selling into the rally, Boyd Cruel, senior softs analyst at
Alaron Trading in Las Vegas, told Dow Jones Newswires. In addition, sell stops
hit below 65.00 cents a pound touched off more long liquidation, he said.
Since the middle of June, futures have continuously pushed higher, despite
poor market fundamentals. An oversupply of FCOJ, ideas the 2004-05 Florida
orange crop is not going to see much of a reduction and a large crop in Brazil
weigh on the market.
"All these factors put together, and you had funds buying the market, and
when that dried up the market can't just rebound," Judith Ganes-Chase,
president of J Ganes Consulting, LLC told Dow Jones Newswires.
There is some hope among market participants that orange juice consumption
could begin to pick up amid the introduction of new products and hopes that
low-carbohydrate dieting will fade some, she said.
"But it's not going to be enough to eat into the massive oversupply."
The Florida Department of Agriculture on Monday said that citrus growers
in the state report trees in most areas in good condition with a flush of new
growth showing.
Meanwhile, Tuesday's Nybot FCOJ speculation and hedging report indicated
that speculators decreased their long positions for the week ended July 23 to
30,975 from 31,612 the previous week. Open interest fell to 40,497 from last
week's 41,456.
Futures volume at 1300 ET (1700 GMT) estimated at 4,868 while options were
seen at 697 lots.
Chart support for Sep is seen at 61.00c and 60.70c. Resistance is found at
62.00c, and 62.50c, traders said.

DJ Nybot FCOJ Review: Moves Higher After Hitting Fresh 5-Week Low

By Nicole Wyckoff
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Dow Jones)--Frozen concentrated orange juice futures
ended higher Wednesday on the New York Board of Trade after falling to a new
five-week low earlier in the session.
Sep settled 115 points higher at 62.30 cents a pound, while Nov rose 135
points to 62.95c.
"We've seen some liquidation the last two days, and we probably saw some
more today," a Florida broker said. "But (with) the market dropping so quickly
here, I think we have some longs that are still trapped."
Sep began the day in negative territory and soon dropped to a fresh low of
59.90c, near a level not seen since June 21, when it fell to 59.65c. However,
shortly after that the contract reversed and rose to a session high of 62.50c.
But once again the market soon fell below unchanged where it stayed until
just over an hour remained in trade. The contract then slowly moved higher
during the last hour.
"We liquidated about 2,000 Sep (contracts) yesterday and 1,800 the day
before, plus whatever was liquidated today," the broker said.
Traders and market participants have now turned their attention toward
private industry Florida 2004-05 crop estimates that are expected to be
released in the middle of August. During the summer trading months, many
analysts and traders begin to discount the new crop.
Early speculation is that the next crop will also be large because the
winter was ideal and the trees went dormant, so they were able to recoup, the
broker said. In addition, the spring and summer weather was good, which is
also helping the new crop.
"If you drew a circle around the biggest crops we've had, it's right up
there," the broker said.
The 2003-04 crop is expected to produce 242 million 90-pound boxes, with
some expecting the 2004-05 crop between 220-230 million boxes.
However, analysts and industry producers are unable at this point to know
the size of the fruit, which will determine how many oranges it will take to
fill a box.
Futures volume at 1300 ET (1700 GMT) estimated at 5,814 while options were
seen at 1,738 lots.
Chart support for Sep is seen at 61.00c, 60.70c and 59.90c. Resistance is
found at 62.50c, 63.00c and 65.00c, traders said.
