Microsoft to launch Xbox 360 gaming console in India

Reuters - 23/05/2006 13:02:25

NEW DELHI, May 23 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) on Tuesday announced plans to launch its popular Xbox 360 gaming console in India, where an economic boom has boosted incomes and spurred spending.

The U.S. software firm aims to hit the market before the Indian festival of lights, or Diwali, when many companies pay annual bonuses to workers. The festival is on Oct. 21, this year.

"We see an opportunity to lead and define the market," said Mitch Koch, corporate vice-president for global retail sales at Microsoft's entertainment and devices division.

"We will be in India before our competition has launched in any other market," he said, refering to rival video game industry leader Sony Corp.'s (SN.PAR) planned debut in the United States of its PS3 in November.

Microsoft hopes to offer the Xbox 360 console, its controller alongwith a game for 19,990 rupees ($439). In the United States, it sells the Xbox 360 and a controller at between $299-$399, while a game costs another $50-60.

"It is estimated there are 1.6 million gamers in India who spend at least 2 hours playing everyday," said Mohit Anand, country manager at Microsoft's India entertainment and devices division.

"The market, which is coming off a small base, is rapidly increasing as the population is young and tech-savvy," he added.

Microsoft said it hoped to set up 1,200 retail outlets in India's main cities of New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and the tech-hubs of Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad.

It declined give sales forecasts for India, but said global Xbox 360 sales were expected to reach 5-5.5 million units by June.

Microsoft also said it had no plans to set up a gaming development centre in India but would work with third-party game developers. ($1=45.50 rupees)

“The corporate market is doing quite well,” said Katherine Egbert, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in San Francisco, who recommends buying Microsoft shares and doesn’t own the stock. “Microsoft has a strong presence in the enterprise, and the three major pieces of their business -- Office, server and tools, and the business PCs -- are growing really well.”

“The twin horses of Microsoft are alive and kicking: Windows 7 and Office 2010,” said Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Partners in New York, who has a “buy” rating on Microsoft and doesn’t own it. “We’re in a refresh cycle that’s not over.”

Microsoft Profit Tops Estimates Amid Corporate Demand - Bloomberg

"They've been putting up good numbers for the past four quarters, so hopefully they'll start getting credit for it this time around," said Yun Kim, an analyst with Gleacher & Co., who rates the stock a buy.
Microsoft is getting a lift from the corporate PC refresh cycle, Kim says. Corporations tend to buy premium versions of Windows, boosting the average selling price of the software and raising sales and earnings overall.

Microsoft's Net Surges 51% on Core Products

Even without the glamour of an iPad or another novel technology hit among consumers in its product lineup, Microsoft Corp. posted a 51% profit jump as two of the most venerable products in the technology business—Windows and Office—continued to thrive.
The software giant's results suggest the standout growth of two of its biggest rivals, Google Inc. and Apple Inc., haven't yet begun to meaningfully hit Microsoft's cash cows.

Yet the earnings still leave unanswered questions about whether Microsoft can reap financial success in fast-growing markets like mobile phones, tablet computers and Internet search.

Apple, for one, recently showed how it has capitalized on businesses that it wasn't in just a few years ago, posting a 70% quarterly earnings jump partly on robust sales of iPhones and iPads. Apple earlier this year passed Microsoft to become the most valuable technology company, with a $280 billion market capitalization to Microsoft's $227 billion.

Still, Microsoft posted solid sales growth of its own over its fiscal first quarter ended Sept. 30. Revenue was $16.2 billion, up 25% from a year earlier.

In an interview, Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein said Microsoft is thriving from a "refresh" of technology purchases by businesses of all sizes, and that the company saw "terrific growth in enterprises and small and medium businesses."

Investors appeared to like what they see, sending Microsoft's shares up 3% in after-hours trading after closing at 4 p.m. at $26.28.

Microsoft's results come after two weeks of relatively strong results from tech companies. Apart from Apple, which was driven by consumers purchasing gadgets like the iPhone, business-oriented companies such as International Business Machines Corp. also reported strong growth.

Other tech companies' earnings suggested computer demand has cooled somewhat, while remaining at high levels. Over the quarter, Microsoft's fastest growing business was Windows, which saw sales jump 66% to $4.79 billion from $2.88 billion during the same period the prior year, when it deferred $1.47 billion in sales.

The sales reflect the positive reception for Windows 7, a new version of Microsoft's flagship operating system that has been more positively reviewed than its predecessor, Vista. The company said it has sold more than 240 million licenses to Windows 7 since the product's debut a year ago, making it the fastest-selling operating system in the company's history.
Still, Microsoft hasn't participated meaningfully in the growing tablet market, now dominated by Apple's iPad. Some industry executives believe tablets are beginning to bite into sales of low-end laptops running Windows. Microsoft executives have said they expect more tablets running Windows 7 to go on sale next year.

"That has a surprisingly big overhang for something that's a relatively small part of the PC market," said Brendan Barnicle, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities.

Another potential threat to Microsoft's Office business—Google's online suite of free applications—doesn't seem to have hurt the company yet.

In the first full quarter for sales for its new Office 2010 software, Microsoft said sales jumped 14% to $5.13 billion from $4.52 billion from a year ago for its business division, which is dominated by Office.

Mr. Klein said Microsoft has sold 20% more units of Office 2010 since the product's launch than it did of the product's previous version during the same time period. "There's no evidence of the competitive issue at all," he said.

Overall, Microsoft said income for the quarter was $5.41 billion, or 62 cents a share, up from $3.57 billion, or 40 cents a share, from the same period a year earlier.

The coming quarters will be big tests of Chief Executive Steve Ballmer's big investments in new consumer markets. The company continues to lose money in its online services division, as its operating loss in the group widened to $560 million from $477 million in the year-ago quarter.

Microsoft recently completed the transition of search advertisers from Yahoo Inc. to Microsoft's online ad system, part of a multiyear deal between the companies in which its Bing search engine has begun powering searches on Yahoo.

Microsoft next week will also begin selling Kinect, a new device that allows users of Xbox 360 game consoles to play videogames without having to hold a controller.

Another major product for the holidays, its Windows Phone 7 operating system for mobile phones, will go on sale on devices next month.

Brad Reback, Oppenheimer: The reports of [Microsoft]’s demise have once again been greatly exaggerated. While the company’s tablet & phone challenges are well documented, we believe MSFT is quietly building a leading cloud presence (Azure, Office 365, XboxLive, etc.) and its core franchises (Windows, Office and S&T) still have plenty of punch left in them, as evidenced by the 24% year-over-year bookings growth the company posted in the quarter.

Philip Winslow, Credit Suisse: In the mid- to long-term, we believe that the market has not only meaningfully undervalued Microsoft’s ability to expand operating margins for the next several years (given the increased focus on cost control), but also the sustainable revenue growth and defensive competitive characteristics of Microsoft’s dominant market positions with respect to its client operating system and office productivity suites.

Sarah Friar, Goldman Sachs: the quarter’s out-performance (particularly on EPS) is likely a relief for the shares. In addition the [second-quarter] brings the launch of Windows Phone 7 and we expect Kinect in the Xbox area to be a strong holiday seller. However, with easy comps behind us and structural risks on the rise we prefer stocks in clearer secular winner positions.

Kash Rangan, BofA Merrill: Operating margins of 44% vs. our estimate of 39% were record high for a Q1 in five years due to tight expense controls. MSFT has been getting religious about costs for some time now.

Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) said Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) beat all metrics in Q1, highlighted by 24% bookings growth and 34% year-over-year growth in OCF.
Analysts Adam Holt, Jennifer Swanson and Melissa A. Gorham said, "While the concern heading in was the consumer, we felt MSFT could show the durability of EPS with its enterprise bus. -- which came through in strong unearneds, Office, Server & Tools and Windows ASPs. Numbers move higher, but leave room for upside, while rev. growth is moving toward 10% in FY11. MSFT can grow EPS mid teens even as PCs slow, which is not reflected in the stock at 11x EPS. Further, early metrics on Cloud adoption are positive and with the enterprise buttressing EPS -- MSFT has call options on huge markets like Cloud & Mobile, and we remain buyers."
The bank sees fiscal 2011 EPS of $2.38 and fiscal 2012 EPS of $2.63.
Microsoft has a potential upside of 18.9% based on a current price of $26.73 and an average consensus analyst price target of $31.78.
Microsoft is currently above its 50-day moving average (MA) of $24.66 ..
