UAW ratifies contract with Ford

March 9, 2009 4:16 PM ET

The United Auto Workers ratified an agreement with Ford Motor Co. on Monday, modifying its national agreement and the Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA) health care trust.

The agreement allows Ford (NYSE: F) to end its legacy retiree health care obligation by funding a new VEBA with assets worth about $13.2 billion. Ford will make $784.5 million in annual installment payments through 2022 and has discretion to fund up to 50 percent of that with Ford stock.
Jeff Wright, president of UAW Local 249, said the measure passed with 67 percent of the vote from union employees at the Ford Assembly Plant in Claycomo.
Ford management was pleased with the agreement.
“By working together with our UAW partners, we identified solutions that will help Ford reach competitive parity with foreign-owned auto manufacturers and that are important to our efforts to operate through the current economic environment without accessing a bridge loan from the U.S. government,” Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s group vice president of global manufacturing and labor affairs, said in a release.
Ford’s Claycomo plant employs about 4,300 people, ranking it No. 1 on the Kansas City Business Journal’s list of Top Area Manufacturers.

Chapter 11
Shares of General Motors (GM) rose in premarket trading Monday as members of the Obama administration's auto task force arrive in Detroit to tour the beleaguered company and its privately held counterpart, Chrysler LLC (Source: Forbes).
Between September and October of last year, short investors reduced their positions in this stock by nearly half – from 30% of the company on loan to 17% in the space of four weeks. Since then this figure has become smaller and now stands at 15.3% which could be the market’s reaction to some good news for the company.
The chart below shows the level of short interest (red line) in GM versus the share price (green line) over the last six months.

Ford (F) also saw a significant amount of its short position decrease in the autumn of last year; down from 24% of the company on loan then to 15% now.

10.03.09 13:44 - Ford: lavoratori ratificano piano taglio costi
