Five Interventions To Reduce Civil Servants By 173,522
The Greek government negotiates with the Troika layoffs of 14,545 reservists of public utilities and organizations under closing in 2013, along with mass retirements and additional dismissals.
On Wednesday, IMF Poul Thomsen called Greece to move aggressively to close unnecessary state agencies and proceed with non-voluntary dismissals, setting the tone of the recent discussions between the government and the international lenders.
According to the planning, civil servants should be decreased by 22.4% from 775,994 to 602.472 people during the period 2010-2015.
Under this plan, public employment in Greece will be one of the lowest in the EU by 2015.
The Troika urges the Greek government to finalize the plan and commit to its implementation. But government officials doubt whether this plan could be adopted by the current political scheme.
According to sources, the plan to reduce by 173,522 workers provides:
- Retirement of 135,028 civil servants by 2015.
- Retirement after reserve and other retirement incentives for 15,148 employees in 2012-13.
- Final dismissal of 14,545 employees in 2013.
- Re-engagement of 1,045 employees, who will be in labour reserve, in 2013.
- Transfer of 2,883 employees from closing utilities and organizations.
