Norwegian telecom operator Telenor ASA (TEL.OS) Wednesday posted stronger-than-expected net profit for the fourth quarter of 2009, helped by a stronger contribution from affiliates, and gave an upbeat assessment of its prospects in 2010.
Telenor said this year it expects to achieve "low single-digit" growth in organic revenue and a margin of earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization and other income and expenses of 27% to 28%. Its Ebitda margin in 2009 was 35%.
It posted net profit of 2.49 billion Norwegian kroner ($420 million) for the three months to Dec. 31, up from NOK1.96 billion a year earlier, against expectations for NOK2.25 billion.
The company proposed a dividend per share of NOK2.50 for 2009. It paid no dividend in 2008.
It said the dividend for 2009 was due to "strong execution" in the year, and the fact that its part-owned units in Ukraine and Russia paid dividends to the company.
Telenor's profit from its associated companies increased to NOK801 million from NOK199 million a year earlier.
Telenor last year agreed with Russian partner Alfa Group to merge Ukraine's Kyivstar and Russia's OAO Vimpel Communications (VIP) into a combined emerging markets telecom operator, ending a long-running legal battle between the two main owners. Telenor said Wednesday the merger process is on track and should be finalized by mid 2010.
"In spite of weak macro economic conditions, our operations in Central and Eastern Europe have ... delivered solid results throughout the year and the Asian operations have shown substantial improvement," said Chief Executive Jon Fredrik Baksaas.
Capital expenditure as a proportion of revenue, excluding licences and spectrum, is seen at 14% to 16%, it added.
Telenor's Indian unit Uninor successfully launched operations in several regions in December and by the end of that month had around one million subscribers, the company said, adding that developing Uninor will be a priority for 2010. Telenor co-owns Uninor with Indian real-estate company Unitech Ltd.(507878.BY).
Telenor reported fourth-quarter sales of NOK24.19 billion, down from NOK25.86 billion a year earlier and missing expectations for NOK24.55 billion. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization fell to NOK6.69 billion from NOK7.89 billion.
Wednesday's report comes after Telenor's Swedish rival Tele2 AB (TEL2-B.SK) Tuesday posted weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings and said it will strive for tight cost control in 2010.
Analyst Frank Maao at DnB NOR, who has a buy rating for Telenor, said its fourth-quarter result and 2010 outlook were stronger than expected and noted that the company seems to have spent less than anticipated on its roll-out in India.
Shares in Telenor closed Tuesday at NOK78.05. The shares have gained 72% over the past 12 months, against a 43% rise in the wider Oslo market.
