MILAN, March 25 (Reuters) - Unipol SpA (
UNPI.MI), Italy's third-largest insurer by premiums, posted a net loss on Thursday after surprise writedowns on equities and said it plans to seek fresh capital of up 500 million euros ($666 million).
The net loss of 769 million euros, compares with a profit of 107 million euros a year earlier, and with analysts' average forecast for a small profit. The most pessimistic analyst forecast was for a net loss of 133 million euros.
The writedowns include 611 million euros on unspecified equity investments and a further 67 million euros on Lehman Brothers bonds, the insurer said.
"Above all in such a difficult context, Unipol has believed it ought to favour a further strengthening of its capital," Chief Executive Carlo Salvatori said in the results statement after the market closed.
Unipol said main shareholder Finsoe had expressed interest in subscribing to the capital hike.
Despite the hefty loss, Unipol plans to return to dividends after a year's break proposing 0.04 euros on each ordinary share, at an overall cost of 100 million euros, it said.
In the non-life sector, which has suffered most in the recession, the combined ratio -- claims and costs as a percentage of premiums -- rose to 108 percent, from 98.7 percent in 2008.
Unipol announced 2009 premiums of 9.501 billion euros in February.
On Thursday, Unipol shares closed 1.6 percent higher at 0.9150 euros outperforming the STOXX Europe insurance index .SXIP which was up 1.2 percent.
