Greece’s National Bank Offers to Buy Competitor Alpha
Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- National Bank of Greece SA, the nation’s largest lender, offered to buy Alpha Bank SA, the third-biggest, for about 2.9 billion euros ($4 billion), nine months after the country’s international bailout.
National Bank will offer eight new shares for 11 existing Alpha shares, according to an e-mailed statement from the Athens-based lender today. National Bank shareholders would own 71 percent of the combined lender, according to the statement.
“The proposed merger would create the leading bank in Greece, which we believe would be pivotal in supporting the recovery of the Greek economy,” National Chairman Vassilis Rapanos said in the statement. “I am deeply convinced about the merits of this transaction and I believe it would resonate favorably with shareholders of both banks.”
Greece’s banks were weakened in the past year as the country’s debt crisis led to a slump in bond prices, a shrinking economy and forced the industry to turn to emergency funding from the European Central Bank. As the country enters a third year of recession, Greece’s lenders face mounting loan losses as the government cuts wages and pensions to ensure the flow of 110 billion euros in bailout funds pledged by the European Union and International Monetary Fund last year.
The combined bank will have a 10.7 percent Core Tier 1 capital ratio, a measure of financial strength, and a loan-to- deposit ratio of 109 percent, according to the statement. The offer is subject to approval by shareholders of both National Bank and Alpha Bank as well as Greece’s regulator.

Venduto o Portugal......BCP fatte fuori oggi a 59 ...bes le ho liquidate nei giorni scorsi...........ho fatto incetta di BNP 319....azz.....devo essere l'unico rimasto a credere nella call.....comunque queste sono da un pò ferme al palo degli 80 e rotti per me fra un paio di mesi a 90 ci tornano
