Hodgkinson also expressed concern about the Irish government's wish to impose losses on around 3.7 billion euros in senior bonds in Anglo Irish and Irish Nationwide, which are being wound down.
"If the effect of doing that with the Anglo bonds were to further weaken the confidence of depositors in Irish banks, then overall that is not a good outcome for Ireland and its banks."
"It is a bigger issue than just the Anglo issue."

Credit Agricole to take 850 mln euro Greece hit
[CAGR.PA] PARIS, July 28 (Reuters) - French bank Credit Agricole <CARG.PA> on Thursday said that an expected loss at its Emporiki unit, along with its participation in the EU Greek rescue plan, would force it to take a second-quarter provision of up to 850 million euros ($1.22 billion). Credit Agricole's Greek Emporiki Bank unit will post a 444 million euro second-quarter loss, while the French bank said it has decided to take a 359 million-euro writedown for the remainder of the unit's acquisition cost.

perdita assolutamente gestibile per il credit agricole.

Sub debt and hybrids in line for downgrade as Fitch revises criteria | Euroweek.com

Main points:
Proposals for consultation by 15/9/2011
Any rating changes likely to be in 2011

Proposals
Basel III compliant - 5 notches below issuer viability rating
Legacy UT2 and T1 - 1 or 2 notch downgrade

The explanation for UT2 and T1 legacy issues is that new resolution regimes will make them more loss absorbent.

Fitch says Incoming resolution regimes will cut across the wide range of terms and conditions on old-style tier ones and tier twos

AIB - Capital Contributions

28th July 2011

Allied Irish Banks, p.l.c. ("AIB") [NYSE:AIB] announces that, further to its announcement on 27 July 2011, the Minister for Finance (the "Minister") and the National Pensions Reserve Fund Commission (the "NPRFC") have today made capital contributions in the aggregate amount of c. €6.054 billion to AIB for no consideration (the "Capital Contributions"). Accordingly, no new Ordinary Shares have been issued by AIB to the Minister and the NPRFC in return for the Capital Contributions. AIB is required to raise a total of c.€14.8 billion of Core Tier 1 Capital, of which €1.6 billion may be in the form of contingent capital, by 31 July 2011 (the "PCAR Requirement"). The Capital Contributions were made in order to satisfy the portion of the PCAR Requirement not satisfied by AIB’s placing of €5 billion of new Ordinary Shares with the NPRFC and the issue of €1.6 billion of contingent capital notes at par to the Minister, which completed on 27 July 2011 (the "Capital Raising"), other capital generating exercises undertaken by AIB and EBS Limited (formerly EBS Building Society) and further burden-sharing measures undertaken with the Group’s subordinated debt holders.

As a result of the proceeds of the Capital Raising and the Capital Contributions, AIB has now received the necessary capital to meet the PCAR Requirement. This has been confirmed by the Central Bank of Ireland.

AIB's Board of Directors acknowledges the continued support of the Minister and the Irish State.
