UPDATE 1-Austria could sell stake in phone carrier -report
Fri Feb 6, 2009 12:15pm
(Adds comments from Weather Investments)
VIENNA, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Austria could sell its 27 percent stake in phone carrier Telekom Austria (
TELA.VI) this year, Austrian newspaper Die Presse reported on Friday, citing sources close to the group.
The paper said Egyptian group Orascom Telecom (
ORTE.CA), which sources have said has been in tentative talks about a deal with Telekom Austria in the past, was not yet "out of the race".
Orascom Telecom is majority owned by Italian company Weather Investments.
The investor relations director for both Orascom Telecom and Weather Investments, Stefano Songini, said the company in question was in fact Weather Investments, the investment vehicle of Orascom Telecom chairman and Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris.
Songini said: "Weather Investments has clearly stated it could look at merging with another similar-sized telecoms operator to create a large wide-scale operator.
"Telekom Austria or others would potentially be right candidates. At this time we are not actively engaging in conversations of this kind with any potential partner."
Telekom Austria, which owns several mobile operators in emerging Europe in addition to its domestic fixed line and mobile franchise, has been the subject of takeover speculation for years after a deal with Swisscom (
SCMN.VX) failed in 2004.
Its availability for sale crucially depends on the Austrian government's stance on privatisation. The current left-right coalition has not given a mandate for a sale yet.
Austrian state holding company OeIAG, which holds the government's stake in Telekom Austria, has repeatedly said it would present "sensible options" for Telekom Austria to the government if and when they turned up.
OeIAG head Peter Michaelis said on Thursday that no M&A project was imminent for Telekom Austria.
Telekom Austria was not immediately available for comment.
By 1213 GMT, shares in Telekom Austria were down 0.6 percent at 10.74 euros, valuing the government's stake at about 1.4 billion euros ($1.8 billion). (Reporting by Boris Groendahl; Editing by Erica Billingham and Andrew Macdonald)
