Latin America helps Telefonica post 10% rise in profit
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Telefonica SA, Europe's second-largest phone company, on Wednesday posted a nearly 10% increase in first-quarter profit as growth in its Latin American business offset a weaker performance in Spain.
Net income for the three months to March 31 improved to 1.69 billion euros ($2.3 billion), or 0.37 euro a share, from 1.54 billion euros, or 0.18 euro a share, earned in the year-earlier quarter.
Revenue slipped 1.4% to 13.7 billion euros. On an organic basis, it inched 2.8% higher.
A strong performance in Latin America, and to a lesser extent in Europe, helped offset the lower contribution of the Spanish business, where sales fell 4.2%.
The company reiterated its guidance for 1% to 3% growth in operating income before depreciation and amortization this year, and maintained its goal to pay a dividend of 1.15 euro a share.
"In what may turn out to be one of the toughest quarters of the credit crunch, Telefonica has shown impressive stability through its unparalleled operational diversification," said Michael Kovacocy, telecoms analyst at Daiwa Securities.
Telefonica shares rose 0.8% in Madrid.
The company is banking on the success of its operations in Latin America to generate growth as European markets falter amid the recession and lower consumer spending.
The company on Wednesday said the revenue decline in Spain reflected "the slowdown in the market as a whole, the stiff competition and lower consumption of voice services from customers."
The average revenue per user for voice fell 12% to 22.3 euros as users made fewer calls and interconnection tariffs dropped.
Ahead of the results analysts had voiced concerns about the performance of the company's domestic business. The Spanish economy slipped into a recession after its housing market crashed and unemployment there has now reached high double-digits.
In Europe, revenue continued to be somewhat resilient. Telefonica's U.K. business, under the O2 brand, performed particularly well, with sales in local currency up 7%, driven in large part by the success of Apple's iPhone. O2 is the exclusive retailer of the phone in the U.K.
